GREEN BAY, Wisc. - The UIC women's tennis team (10-3/3-0 HL) came out strong on Saturday against Green Bay (2-9/0-2 HL) at Western Racquet and Fitness Club, as they captured a 6-1 victory and extended their Horizon League win streak to 136.
The Flames were able to hold the Phoenix to registering no more than two points in each of their sets. UIC collected two-of-three doubles matches and five-of-six singles.
Taking the first point with doubles, Mariya Kovaleva and Haley Craig overpowered Jennifer Bradfield and Morgan Weuve at No. 1 with an 8-1 win, as Teona Tsertsvadze and Elisa Simonetti came away with an 8-2 win over Rebecca Nelson and Maria Anderson at No. 2. At No. 3, Green Bay's Amanda Timm and Samantha Iwen won by default, as UIC was without a sixth player.
The momentum continued in favor of the Flames as they shifted over to singles to take their victories in straight-set matches. Capturing wins by margins of 6-0, 6-1, Kovaleva topped Bradfield at No. 1 and Craig defeated Timm at No. 3. Tsertsvadze came in at No. 2 against Weuve and Kathryn Sharples competed with Nelson at No. 5 to come out on top of their opponents in 6-1, 6-1 decisions. Rounding out singles was Simonetti at No. 4, as she took out Anderson, 6-1, 6-2.
The lone win for the Phoenix came from Iwen at No. 6 singles, as she won by default with no competitor from UIC.
The Flames return to competition on Saturday, April 7, when they take on Detroit in Southfield, Mich., at the Franklin Athletic Club at 3 p.m. (CT).
