CHICAGO - The UIC men's soccer team (5-3-2, 1-1-1 HL) came up short in its match against Detroit (5-4-1, 2-1-0 HL) Saturday night at Flames Field, as the Titans tied the game in the second half and scored the golden goal six minutes into overtime for a 2-1 (OT) win. Junior
Jorge Alvarez scored the Flames' lone goal in the 33rd minute for his fourth of the season.
"It was an extremely disappointing result," head coach Sean Phillips said. "Our performance tonight was not where it was on Wednesday (against Valparaiso). We created enough chances, but at the end of it, Detroit took advantage of their opportunities and we didn't. They kept at it and stayed with it, got their goal to tie it and outplayed us from that point on."
UIC held its own in the first half and took the 1-0 lead in the 33rd minute when Alvarez dribbled around a Detroit defender and netted his fourth goal of the season, while it also marked the sixth time this season that the Flames scored the first goal. UIC made four additional shot attempts with two resulting in saves by the Titans' keeper.
Detroit came back in the second half and continuously attacked the Flames before scoring the equalizer in the 68th minute off a free kick taken by Spiro Pliakos that was headed in by Jason Leslie.
UIC created its chances and took nine shots in the second with five on goal from redshirt-junior
Piotr Lagowski, junior
Joel Salmeron, Alvarez and senior
Jesus Torres.
The game headed to overtime with the score tied at 1-1. The Titans took control and made three shot attempts before scoring the game-winning goal in the 96th minute from Tyler Moorman on a pass from Pliakos.
Sophomore goalkeeper
Andrew Putna faced four shots-on-goal and made two saves on the night to bring his season total to 41. He now owns a 0.92 goals-against average.
The Flames will take a break from Horizon League competition and head to Denver, Colo., to challenge Denver on Friday, Oct. 10, at CIBER Field at 8 p.m. CT.
