AKRON, Ohio - The UIC women's tennis team (1-2) came away with its first win of the season as it defeated ASA College, 5-2, Saturday morning at LaTuchie Tennis Center. The Flames clinched the doubles point and went on to capture four matches in singles.
Seniors Kathryn Sharples and Jana Knoppe recorded their second-straight doubles win of the weekend as they took down Daniela Vanko and Diana Perez, 6-3, at No. 2. UIC's other doubles victory came by default to Natalia Kuvakina and Veronica Lacerda at No. 3 as ASA was without players.
The lone loss in doubles came at No. 1, where Mariana Palacios and Ann-Sophie Hahn dropped a 6-2 decision to Natallia Vavulina and Danielle Winter.
Knoppe continued her winning streak in singles as she captured a 6-0, 6-2 win over Winter at No. 4 to remain perfect this season. Additional straight-set wins for the Flames came at No. 3, with Hahn claiming a 6-4, 6-4 victory over Perez, and at No. 5, with Keti Mebuke blanking Sacha Espiritu, 6-0, 6-0. The last win came at No. 6 to Lacerda, as the Avengers were again without a player.
The final two matches for UIC resulted with a loss at No. 1, as Vavulina defeated Palacios, 6-4, 6-2, and at No. 2, where Sharples fell in her third set to Vanko, 6-3, 4-6, 10-7.
The Flames will make the trek back to Chicago and face DePaul at Lakeshore Sport & Fitness on Sunday at 1 p.m. CT.
