CLEVELAND, Ohio - The UIC men's basketball team (5-20, 0-11) dropped a road contest at second-place Cleveland State (18-9, 9-3) on Thursday night by a final score of 73-53. The Vikings proved why they are one of the nation's top three-point shooting teams, connecting on 56 percent (10-of-18) of their shots from behind the arc as CSU extends its winning streak to seven straight. Senior Hayden Humes scored a team-high 13 points, playing in his first game since Jan. 22 due to an eye injury. Senior Kelsey Barlow followed close behind with 12 points, his 18th double-digit game of the season.
Cleveland State's hot-shooting began in the first half, hitting 4-of-5 from the outside, and continued in the second by going 6-of-13. CSU has now shot 50 percent or better in the last five games. Trey Lewis posted a game-high 18 points on 4-of-5 three-point shooting, while Bryn Forbes and Jon Harris netted 15 apiece.
After being down 30-25 at halftime, the Flames scored four straight points to start the second period and pulled to within one of the Vikings. CSU then went on a 9-1 run capped off by a Harris triple to go in front of the Flames, 39-30. The closest UIC would get to CSU is seven points for the remainder of the night. The Vikings used dominating interior play down the stretch to distance themselves and out-scored UIC in the paint, 36-14.
Junior Will Simonton gave UIC a solid 14 minutes off the bench as he grabbed a season-high seven rebounds. Sophomore Jake Wiegand chipped in nine points in 14 minutes. The Flames lost the battle on the offensive boards for the first time in Horizon League play, but still lead HL opposition by a margin of 125-89.
The Flames return to action on Saturday at Youngstown State with tip-off scheduled for 6 p.m. CT. YSU dropped a home contest to first-place Green Bay tonight by a final of 71-40.
