BEAUMONT, Texas - The UIC baseball team (1-0) opened the 2014 season in dominating fashion on Friday afternoon with an 11-3 victory against Marist in Beaumont, Texas at Vincent-Beck Stadium. Five Flames players recorded multiple hits as the team totaled 15 on the day. Junior pitcher Tomas Michelson lasted 7.2 innings for the win, striking out five Red Fox batters with just one earned run. Junior Tyler Detmer paced UIC at plate, going 3-for-5 with a pair of runs and RBI.

"Today was a great way to start the season," said Associated Head Coach Sean McDermott. "We were able to capitalize on a few of their (Marist) mistakes and keep the pressure on by stringing together some hits. We gave Tomas (Michelson) a cushion and he took us deep into the game. I'm really proud of our guys, but we have a lot of work to do."

After striking first with a lone run in the opening frame, UIC posted six runs in the second inning to go in front 7-0. Marist was plagued by four errors and the Flames kept the heat on with four hits. Redshirt junior Alex Lee began the surge with a safe trot home after a throwing error by the third baseman. In his first collegiate at-bat, freshman Mickey McDonald drove in the next two runs with a single to centerfield. Detmer and senior Alex Jurich went on to post RBI-singles as the remaining runs scored off of errors.

With the Flames comfortably ahead, Michelson was able to scatter the eight Marist hits as he faced 34 batters on the day. Freshman Mitchell Schulewitz relieved Michelson with two outs in the eighth and fanned the very next batter to end the inning. Schulewitz returned in the ninth and struck out the first batter. He was then replaced by freshman lefty Ankur Shah who breezed the next batter and forced a groundout to seal the season-opening win.

Seniors John Coen and Jacob McNamara picked up two hits apiece along with Jurich and McDonald. Coen and junior Carl Sugihara also notched one stolen base each.

UIC returns to the diamond tomorrow at 11 a.m. CT against Marist and turns around for a 2 p.m. contest versus host Lamar.
