CHICAGO - The UIC women's gymnastics team captured its third home victory of the season with a 194.100-193.950 win over Ball State on Saturday at the Physical Education Building. Senior Catherine Dion posted the best scores for the Flames and came away with first on three events, while junior Citlali Cuevas, sophomores Kerensa Mitchell and Alexandra Vedenin, and Dion all set new career-high scores.

"It was an exciting meet from beginning to end," co-head coach Peter Jansson said. "Another score over 194 and another win against a MAC opponent is definitely the way we want to be going at this time of the year."

"We started a little flat on vault, but had one of the season's best performances on bars. Beam has become very solid over the last couple of weeks and we were really excited to see both Kerensa (Mitchell) and Catherine (Dion) get 9.90 from judges, even if the average was not there. We finished strong on floor, Catherine, Sasha (Vedenin) and Gabby (May) had great floor routines and Citlali (Cuevas) had her best routine of the year, whether the score shows it or not."

Beginning competition on vault, Dion scored 9.775 for second place, followed by Vedenin with 9.675 to finish in the top half of all competitors.

Dion took first on bars with 9.850 as Cuevas came in with a career-high 9.800 for her best finish of the season at second. Redshirt-junior Kimberly Randall matched her personal best and tied for fourth alongside freshman Nicole Szabo and junior Gabrielle May with 9.750 to contribute to UIC's second-best bars score of the season with 48.900.

The Flames tallied their best beam score of the season with 48.750. Dion produced a career-best 9.900 for another first-place finish on the day, while Mitchell recorded a personal-best 9.825 for third and Vedenin collected a career high with her score of 9.725.

Finishing the meet on floor, Dion took first claimed first with 9.825, as Cuevas matched her season-high 9.725 and tied for fourth with Vedenin and May.

Dion, Cuevas and May finished first (39.350), second (38.650) and third (38.150), respectively, in the all-around, as Ball State was without any all-around competitors.

The Flames resume action next weekend, when they head to Kalamazoo, Mich., to face off against Western Michigan on Sunday, March 9, at 1 p.m. CT at University Arena.
