KALAMAZOO, Mich. - The UIC women's gymnastics team produced its second-best score of the season on Sunday while it fell to Western Michigan, 195.075-194.225, at University Arena. Senior Catherine Dion took the best scores for the Flames and came away with a pair of first-place finishes, while redshirt-junior Kimberly Randall joined Dion on vault with a team-high score.

"It was another strong meet and one of the best scores of the season for the team," co-head coach Peter Jansson said. "We were leading against another MAC opponent heading into our last event, but the nerves got the best of us."

"There were several great individual performances, as Gabrielle (May) had her best all-around of the year, Catherine (Dion) looked great on all four events, Sasha (Vedenin) had a wonderful day, Tamara (Moten) competed on floor with a season high and Nicole (Szabo) on bars had a great routine as well."

UIC kicked off competition by finishing ahead of the Broncos by a final of 48.925-48.800. Dion tied for first with 9.825, as freshman Nicole Szabo and junior Gabrielle May tied for third with 9.800 and junior Citlali Cuevas rounded out the top five with 9.775.

The Flames would go on to lead through their next two events. On vault, Randall and Dion tied for second after each scoring 9.800, with sophomore Alexandra Vedenin coming in a three-way tie for fourth with 9.775. Dion then came in second on floor after matching her personal best with 9.875, as May collected fourth place with 9.800, Vedenin tied her career high with 9.750 and junior Tamara Moten recorded a season-high 9.675.

During UIC's last rotation on beam, Dion took the title with 9.875, followed by Vedenin's third-place finish with 9.750, but the pair would serve as the only Flames to outscore their opponents.

In the all-around competition, Dion claimed first while tying her career best of 39.375, as May set a career high with her score of 38.875 and Cuevas picked up a total of 38.225.

The Flames will return to Chicago for their final home meet of the regular season on Saturday, as they host conference-foe Illinois State at the Physical Education Building at 5 p.m. CT and will honor Dion in a Senior Day ceremony.
