MILWAUKEE, Wis. - The UIC volleyball team (6-10, 0-1) fell (18-25, 29-27, 19-25, 18-25) in its Horizon League opener at preseason favorite Milwaukee (6-8, 1-0) on Friday night by a final of 3-1. Junior Stephenee Yancy tied for a match-high with 16 kills, extending her double-digit kill streak to 16 matches.
Senior Maggie Strus collected 14 digs for her ninth consecutive double-digit effort on the 2014 campaign. Strus now owns 1,492 career digs, which ranks second in program history, needing 40 more to become UIC's all-time digs leader.
Redshirt freshman Nicole Johnson had 42 assists on the night, which counts as her 11th match with 40 or more assists this season. Johnson has racked up 88 assists in her last two matches.
Sophomore Kara Johnson put down 12 kills for her 13th double-digit performance on the year and added 12 digs, while senior Molly McCoy collected eight kills, bringing her career total to 628.
The Flames started fast and held a 4-0 lead in set number one. Milwaukee answered with a 9-3 run that included three kills by junior Panther Nicole Latzig and UWM rode that momentum to a 25-18 first-set victory. UIC claimed victory in set number two as they accumulated 15 total kills as a team. The Flames led by as much as five points (15-10) and eventually pulled out the thrilling second set, 29-27. The Panthers swept the remaining sets by a score of 25-19 and 25-18.
The Flames will be back in action on Saturday at Green Bay with a scheduled start time of 4 p.m. CT. The Phoenix fell in their conference opener at home against Valparaiso on Friday night by a final of 3-0 (25-20, 25-21, 25-23).
