GREEN BAY, Wis. - The UIC volleyball team (7-10, 1-1) captured its first win of the Horizon League season on Saturday with a 3-0 (28-26, 28-26, 26-24) sweep over Green Bay (2-11, 0-2) at the Kress Center. Junior Stephenee Yancy paced all players with 16 kills to contribute to the Flames' 51 kills against the Phoenix.
UIC came out in the opening set and rallied back to take a 28-26 win with a .351 hit percentage after Green Bay was in position with a 24-22 advantage. The second set came in repeat fashion as the Flames pulled away with a 28-26 victory for a 2-0 lead. In the third and final set, the Phoenix climbed to a 19-14 lead, but UIC brought the score to 24-24 before clinching a 26-24 victory.
The Flames were led in kills by Yancy, who reached double digits for the 17th-consecutive match with 16, and sophomore Kara Johnson, who added 12 kills for her 14th double-digit outing of the season. Sophomore Casey Harris additionally put down nine kills to mark a season high in the category.
Redshirt-freshman Nicole Johnson dished out 39 assists to bring her season total to 781, while she additionally added three kills, two service aces and seven digs.
Maggie Strus produced a team-high 10 digs against to improve her double-digit dig streak to 10-consecutive matches. Strus owns a total of 242 digs on the season to contribute to her career total of 1,502.
The Flames continue Horizon League play next weekend at home when they host Cleveland State on Friday (Oct. 3) at 7 p.m. CT and Youngstown State on Saturday (Oct. 4) at 4 p.m. at the Flames Athletic Center.
