CLEVELAND -- UIC finished its two-match swing through the Buckeye State Saturday afternoon, but the Flames did not have enough firepower to overcome league-leading Cleveland State and the Vikings won, 3-0 (25-18, 25-20, 25-16).
UIC ‘s offensive attack was out of system for much of the afternoon and the Flames hit only .129 as a team with 30 kills but 17 attacking errors on 101 attempts. CSU, meanwhile, was firing on all cylinders as it notched an attack percentage of .324 with 36 kills and only 12 miscues.
Five different UIC hitters notched at least five kills, but no one recorded more than eight in the defeat. Senior Stephenee Yancy, the conference's leader in kills per set in conference matches, was limited to eight kills on 17 swings as she hit a team-best .353 Saturday. Kyisha Hunt and Kara Johnson each added six, while Alyssa Ehrhardt and Casey Harris put down five. Ehrhardt was also one of two UIC players to register double-digit digs with 12. Bridget Powell led the Flames with 13 digs, while Nicole Johnson, who ranks among the nation's leaders in total assists, handed out 25 helpers.
UIC's overall record moved to 11-11 in 2015, and its Horizon League mark stands at 4-4. Three of the Flames' wins in conference play thus far have come away from home. Cleveland State sits atop the Horizon League standings at the halfway point with a league record of 7-1.
The Flames begin the second half of the conference slate on Friday, Oct. 23 with a visit by the Horizon League's newest member, Northern Kentucky, at 7 p.m. UIC defeated the Norse in the first go-around, 3-1, on Sept. 26. Next weekend also features a visit from the Wright State Raiders on Saturday, Oct. 24 at 4 p.m.
