CHICAGO -- UIC could not contain a balanced Green Bay attack Friday night and the Phoenix escaped the Flames Athletic Center with a 3-0 (25-18, 25-14, 25-20) victory.
UIC's Stephenee Yancy led all players with 16 kills, and she hit .407 (16k-5e-27ta), but it was not enough as the rest of the squad combined to notch only 23 kills on 73 attempts with 17 errors. Green Bay, meanwhile, hit an eye-popping .370 as a team with only nine errors in a three-set win. The Phoenix boasted five players with at least six kills apiece in the match.
After UIC scored the opening point of the match on a ball handling error on the Phoenix, Green Bay rattled off five unanswered points to take a quick four-point lead, prompting the Flames to use an early timeout. The home team fell behind by eight points, 11-3, before orchestrating a five-point run of its own to force Green Bay to call for a stoppage. UIC's Stephenee Yancy registered a block out of the break to make it a two-point affair, however the Flames could not come all the way back.
Green Bay earned a 25-18 win in the first as it hit .357 with 14 kills and only four errors. On the other side of the net, UIC was hampered by eight hitting errors. The Flames also committed a pair of serving errors in the frame.
UIC fell behind early in the second set, 9-4, and the team never recovered. Kyisha Hunt got her team to within three points at 10-7 after a kill, but Green Bay went on a 5-2 run to put more distance between itself and the home team. The Phoenix eventually won, 25-14. Yancy posted seven of her 16 kills in the second set, while Kara Johnson added six of her seven kills on the night for the Flames.
Following the 10-minute intermission, UIC returned to the floor with a renewed energy and enthusiasm. The Flames scored 10 of the set's first 15 points to open up their biggest lead of the evening. Green Bay chipped away, however, and eventually evened the ledger at 11 points apiece. UIC later trailed, 14-13, but a kill from Yancy and two in a row by Johnson turned the slim deficit into a two-point lead. The Flames soon led 18-15 after a kill by Casey Harris, but after that the Phoenix went on a 6-0 run to take the lead back for good. Green Bay won the set, 25-20, to take the match, 3-0.
UIC's Bridget Powell notched a match-high 11 digs, including seven in the third stanza. Alyssa Ehrhardt added seven digs and five kills. Hunt finished the night with eight kills for the Flames.
The weekend concludes with another match at the Flames Athletic Center on Saturday afternoon. The Flames will welcome the Milwaukee Panthers (5-13, 3-3 HL) to the Windy City for a 4 p.m. first serve.
