CHICAGO - UIC women's basketball (2-0) battled through a night of poor shooting and miscues to outlast Chicago State (0-2) in overtime 51-47 at the Jones Convocation Center. The Flames shot 31 percent (20-64) while committing 21 turnovers in the win.
UIC held Chicago State to five points in the first period, but managed just six points, going 3-19 (15.8 percent) from the floor. UIC started 1-for-9 (11.1 percent) and led 2-0 with five minutes left in the first period. The Flames made one of 11 shots (9.1 percent) from beyond the arc in the first half and 1 of 16 (6.3 percent) for the game.
Chicago State scored its first points of the game on a three pointer with two minutes remaining in the opening period. That gave them a spark as the Cougars turned things around in the second period, outscoring the Flames 18-13 to take a 23-19 lead into halftime.
As the game swayed back and forth, Caitlin Garant kept the Flames close chipping in 10 points, six rebounds and three assists, but it was Ruvanna Campbell's layup with 2:02 remaining in the fourth period that gave UIC a 40-37 lead. Campbell finished with 11 points and 12 boards, her 50th career double-double and second on the season. Chicago State responded when Konner Harris made her only basket of the game, a three pointer with 40 seconds left to send the game into overtime.
In the overtime period, the Flames rode the energy of Kendyl Nunn. Nunn finished with a team high 16 points along with nine rebounds. She scored nine of UIC's 11 points in the overtime to seal the win. "Kendyl's role is to bring us a spark off the bench and she has played her role well," said Miller.
"If you can win ugly and not play your best and come out victorious on the road, it's a sign of a potentially good team," said Miller. "We will take this win and learn from it."
