CHICAGO -- UIC forward Dikembe Dixson became the first player in program history to win three Horizon League Freshman of the Week awards when the conference announced the latest batch of weekly award recipients Monday (Dec. 28).
Dixson also becomes the first player in program history to receive three weekly recognitions from the Horizon League since Mark Miller was named the conference's Player of the Week four times during the 1997-98 campaign. The Freeport, Ill., native is the first UIC Flame to win three Horizon League Newcomer of the Week awards.
In UIC's lone game last week, a 91-74 victory over Purdue Calumet, Dixson narrowly missed out on his third double-double of the season. As it stands he poured in 17 points, including 15 in the first half, and corralled a game-high nine rebounds for the Flames. It was the seventh time in 10 games that Dixson paced the team on the boards. The forward also added a career-high three steals, plus two blocks and an assist in a game-high 35 minutes of action. He was one of five players to score in double figures as he shot over 43 percent from the field and 50 percent from beyond the arc.
Dixson, who leads the conference with three HL Freshman of the Week nods, has started all 10 games of his collegiate career at UIC. He is the team's leading scorer and top rebounder with 12.9 points per game and 7.4 rebounds per game, ranking tops among all freshmen, and in the top 11 among all players in the Horizon League in both categories.
The Flames hit the hardwood once again on Tuesday, Dec. 29, when they close nonconference play against the Northern Illinois Huskies at the UIC Pavilion. Tickets are available by calling 312-413-UIC1 (8421) or visiting Ticketmaster today.
