FINAL STATS YPSILANTI, Mich. - The UIC women's gymnastics team fell 194.675-192.425 at Eastern Michigan Sunday afternoon inside the Convocation Center. The Flames led by a margin of 97.150-96.700 after the first two rotations, earning a 48.650 on vault and a 48.500 on bars. Despite UIC posting a season-best team score of 48.475 on floor, the Eagles ended the afternoon on top.
"After a very strong start on vault and bars we were ahead of Eastern Michigan, who beat us handily two weeks ago," head coach Peter Jansson said. "We were neck and neck after a strong floor performance, but due to a couple of mistakes in the beginning of the beam line up, we ended up slipping behind in the end."
Senior Gabrielle May earned a career-best 9.875 on floor in route to setting a career-best 39.175 all-around score. May took home top honors in the all-around category and placed second on both vault (9.825) and floor.
The Flames started on bars where sophomore Riley Cholod was the top finisher. Behind a three-way-tie for first, Cholod placed fourth with a career-best score of 9.750 followed by May in fifth (9.725). Senior Citlali Cuevas earned a 9.700 in the event, while sophomore Nikki Woodruff scored a 9.625.
On vault, senior Kimberly Randall won with a score of 9.850. After May in second, Woodruff was the next finisher in seventh with a score of 9.700. Senior Chelsea Bailey tied her career-best score on vault with a 9.675.
UIC earned its season-best score of 48.475 on floor in the third rotation, following May's career-best 9.875 and second place finish. Woodruff gave a career-best performance on floor, earning a 9.750 in seventh place. Bailey also earned a career-best on the apparatus with a score of 9.650.
May was the top UIC finisher on beam with a 9.750 and tied for third place. Cholod posted her second career-best of the afternoon on beam with a 9.675 and tied for seventh place with Cuevas.
"It was a very solid day," Jansson continued. "We earned our second-highest score of the year and we are looking forward to the growth."
UIC returns home to the UIC Pavilion to face Big-Ten member Michigan State on Sunday (Feb. 22) at 2 p.m. CT.
