Final Results
VALPARAISO, Ind. - The UIC women's tennis team (4-6, 1-0 HL) pulled away in its first Horizon League match of the season on Thursday to capture a 7-0 victory against Valparaiso (1-9, 0-1 HL) at the Courts of NWI. The win marked the Flames' eighth-consecutive shutout over Valparaiso.
UIC secured its first point of the day in doubles after winning at the first and third positions. Senior Keti Mebuke and sophomore Oana Manole garnered their third win of the season at No. 1 against Kaitlyn Hamel and Kathleen Hebble, 6-1, as freshmen Bianca Zuzu and Melika LeBlanc also tabbed their third win with a 6-1 defeat over Megan Barthels and Michele Fredlake at No. 3.
Juniors Jackie Altansarnai and Ann-Sophie Hahn went unfinished at No. 2 against Cary Milanes and Paige Heuer.
The Flames were able to produce straight-set wins at five positions to close out the day's competition. LeBlanc held Fredlake without a point at No. 6 for a 6-0, 6-0 win and Mebuke followed with a 6-2, 6-1 victory at No. 1 versus Hamel. The match was clinched when Zuzu took out Barthels, 6-1, 6-3, at No. 5.
Hahn and Altansarnai each continued three-match win streaks as Hahn bested Heuer, 6-2, 6-3, at No. 4 and Altansarnai came out on top of Hebble, 6-4, 6-2, at No. 2. The final match was decided in the third set when Manole came back against Milanes to claim a 6-3, 3-6, 11-9 win.
UIC will make a quick turnaround as it heads to Normal, Ill., for a 1 p.m. CT non-conference match against Illinois State on Friday at the Gregory Street Tennis Courts.
