Volleyball Sweeps CCSU, 3-0, to Open UIC Invitational

CHICAGO - The UIC volleyball team (2-2) came out victorious as it kicked off the UIC Invitational with a 3-0 (25-22, 25-21, 25-17) win over Central Connecticut State (3-1) on Friday afternoon at the Flames Athletic Center. The Flames will follow up the victory with their second match of the tournament against Morgan State (0-4) tonight at 7 p.m. CT.

UIC never gave up its lead once claiming the 5-4 advantage in both the first and third sets as it led all the way through the second stanza. The closest the Blue Devils would get was in the first set with the score at 21-20. The Flames largest lead came in the third set as they were up by nine at match point.

UIC outhit CCSU, 47-34, added 44 assists, came up with 41 digs and recorded a season-high 10 service aces, with Alyssa Ehrhardt (4) and Tracy Friel (3) contributing seven of the serves.

Ehrhardt set a season high in kills as she led the Flames with 16 on 29 attempts, marking double-digit outputs in each of UIC's four games this season. Stephenee Yancy followed with 14 kills, also tabbing her fourth double-digit effort.

Nicole Johnson came up with 40 assists as she has produced at least 40 helpers in each game this year. Bridget Powell (13) and Kara Johnson (10) topped the Flames in digs.

Following tonight's action, UIC will close out its hosted tournament against Chicago State on Saturday at 4 p.m.
