Men’s Soccer Plays to 1-1 Draw at NIU

Todd scores fifth of season as Flames post 20-plus shots for second-consecutive game

DEKALB, Ill. – For just the second time this season, it took 110 minutes for the game to be decided with the UIC men's soccer team (4-5-2) taking a 1-1 draw against Northern Illinois (1-5-3) Tuesday night at the NIU Soccer Complex. Max Todd scored his fifth goal of the season for the Flames and his second in as many games.

UIC garnered 20-plus shots for the second-consecutive game as seven players contributed to the 25 shots with 12 on goal. Todd led the Flames in attempts for the sixth time this year as he posted a career-high nine shots and five on goal, as Oscar Gonzalez additionally reached a career high with seven chances.

Andrew Putna went the full 110 minutes in goal as he faced 12 shots and made five saves, the most for the senior since UIC's season-opener against San Diego State on Aug. 26.

With one shot sent wide by Todd seven minutes in, the Flames came out to dominate over a two minute span beginning in the 18th minute. A shot saved by Todd allowed Nestor Garcia a chance that was blocked, setting up the first of three corner kicks within the next minute. Mike Jimenez fired off an attempt that was saved, with Gonzalez having his shot blocked off the second corner.

UIC continued with its persistence, but it was NIU to score the first goal of the game in the 28th minute as Max Voss scored off assists from Christian Molina and Kevin Rodriguez. Three more shots came for the Flames in the half, with one resulting in a save from Gonzalez.

The Flames took charge at the start of the second half and were awarded a corner kick that allowed Jose Fuentes to get off a header attempt but it was blocked. Todd followed with a shot on goal before Gonzalez sent a shot wide and Todd with another that was blocked.

In the 59th minute, the Huskies were called for a foul to position UIC with a free kick. With Todd set to take the kick, he sent it into the back of the net from 30 yards out to put the game in a 1-1 tie.

The Flames were able to fend off three consecutive corner kicks taken by NIU before they came up with back-to-back quality chances from Gonzalez and Alex Cervantes in the 72nd minute that were both saved.

It was all UIC in the final 10 minutes with Gonzalez taking two shots that fell just off target and Todd getting an attempt with seconds to spare that was saved.

The Huskies got off three shots in the first overtime with Putna making one save before the Flames were allotted a chance that Fuentes put on goal.

UIC took control in the final overtime period as Cervantes, Todd and Abel Guzman all had great looks at the goal but NIU's Christoph Koninger came up with the save on each to bring his game total to 11.

The Flames will return home as they prepare for Horizon League action Saturday at Flames Field against Detroit Mercy at 7 p.m. CT.
