CLEVELAND – The UIC women's volleyball team fell to Cleveland State 3-0 (20-25, 22-25, 12-25) Saturday afternoon in CSU's Woodling Gymnasium.
Sophomore
Ali Witt earned a hitting percentage of .462 (6k-0e-13a) for the Flames offense, while freshman
Grace Murphy once again gave a strong showing in the libero jersey, digging out 11. Graduate transfer
Kelsie Groot led UIC with nine kills, and senior
Alyssa Ehrhardt added six terminations of her own.
Cleveland State was able to pull out to a 10-7 lead to open up game one, but UIC fought back to tie the match at 12. The CSU offense struck back, once again creating space and a 22-16 lead. The Flames were able to contribute four more points off of a pair of kills from both Ehrhardt and Witt before the Vikings ran away with the first set, 25-20.
The second set was a close match, as the Flames kept on pace with CSU until the final points. With the score tied at 19, the Vikings pulled ahead with four-straight kills to create a 23-19 lead. Junior
Kaylin Powell brought in a kill to make it 23-20, but a UIC error brought CSU within one. A Viking error and a termination from senior
Casey Harris brought the score to 24-22, but CSU's Grace Kauth killed the final point to put the Vikings up 2-0.
UIC was unable to keep up with the Cleveland State offense through the third, dropping the final set 25-12 to allow the Vikings to complete the sweep.
The Flames will continue their road streak next weekend, facing Youngstown State on Saturday, Oct. 14 and Northern Kentucky on Saturday, Oct. 15.
