Volleyball Bested by Valparaiso

Flames drop 3-0 decision

VALPARAISO, Ind. – The UIC women's volleyball team took a 3-0 (21-25, 19-25, 15-25) in Valparaiso's Athletics-Recreation Center.

Senior Alyssa Ehrhardt paced the Flames offense with 15 kills, followed by fellow senior Kelsie Groot with 12. Redshirt junior Nicole Johnson added 14 digs alongside her 33 assists, while sophomore Gaia Gbola also dug out 14. Senior libero Kara Johnson earned eight digs, and Groot and Ehrhardt each recorded seven digs.

Valparaiso jumped out to a 17-13 lead in set one, but kills from Groot and Ehrhardt combined with a pair of Valpo errors to tie it at 17. The Crusaders responded with four of their own, to jump ahead, 21-17, and never looked back, eventually taking set one 25-21.

UIC was down by one, 15-14, when Valpo took four straight to extend its lead to 19-14. A service error temporarily paused the streak, but the Crusaders quickly put up another four to make it 23-15. An Ehrhardt kill gave UIC another point, and a UIC error brought the score to 24-16. Two consecutive kills from Kaylin Powell and a kill from Ehrhardt gave the Flames another three, but Valparaiso closed out set two, 25-19.

Game three started with a 13-13 tie, but two Crusader streaks totaling 11 points put the frame out of reach for UIC, 25-15.

UIC will wrap up the road trip tomorrow against Wright State at 3 p.m. CT.
