CHICAGO -- UIC concluded its 2015-16 regular season Sunday and now the Flames will turn their attention toward postseason play and the 2016 Little Caesar's Horizon League men's basketball championship.
For the second consecutive year, the Flames will draw the Wright State Raiders in the opening round of the conference tournament. This year's rematch will be played on Saturday, March 5 at 4 p.m. CST inside historic Joe Louis Arena in Detroit, Mich.
A year ago UIC erased a 19-point halftime deficit on March 3, 2015, to post a 60-57 triumph at the UIC Pavilion last season. The Flames went on to knock off No. 3 Oakland in the second round before being knocked off by second-seeded Green Bay in the semifinal game.
This season's series between UIC and Wright State saw each team post a victory on its home floor. Despite a then-career-high 29 points from freshman Dikembe Dixson, the Flames fell at the Nutter Center on Jan. 24, 80-66. In the rematch at the UIC Pavilion on Feb. 11, UIC got it done on the defensive end as the squad held the Raiders to a field-goal percentage of .265 in the second half of a 64-59 triumph. Dixson and sophomore Tai Odiase combined to score 44 of the team's 64 points en route to Horizon League Freshman of the Week and Co-Player of the Week honors, respectively. In two career games vs. Wright State, Dixson is averaging 27.5 points per game while shooting 52.9 percent from the field. He also pulled down 9.5 rebounds per game.
The winner of Saturday's game will face the winner of the first-round clash between No. 6 Detroit and No. 7 Youngstown State in the second round on Sunday, March 6 at 2:30 p.m. CST.
#MotorCityMadness features nine games with the first six games streaming on ESPN3. Monday's semifinal games will be televised on ESPNU, while Tuesday's championship game will be on either ESPN or ESPN2 with Mike Tirico and Dan Dakich on the call at 6 p.m. CST.
