Men’s Soccer Falls to Gonzaga, 4-1

Todd scores Flames’ second goal of season

SPOKANE, Wash. – The UIC men's soccer team (0-1-1) was unable to answer back to three-consecutive goals scored by Gonzaga (1-0-1) Sunday as it dropped a 4-1 decision at Luger Field. Max Todd picked up the lone tally for the Flames, marking his and the team's second goal of the season, with Sasha Simon earning the assist.

UIC put up 10 shots in the match from eight different players, led by Todd with three attempts, as Todd, Gonzalo Romo, Dimitris Strantzalis and Yuri Dominiciano all had one shot on goal. The Bulldogs fired off 11 shots and forced seven shots on goal.

Andrew Putna played the complete game and made three saves.

Gonzaga converted on the first shot of the game in the fourth minute when Austin Giftopoulos sent in a cross that found Ben White for a header into the opposite corner of the net to take the 1-0 lead.

Todd responded six minutes later as he collected the ball from Simon and shot it into the lower right side of the net from six yards out for his second goal of the season and to make it a 1-1 game.

It was not long before the Bulldogs reclaimed the lead as Sam Olson sent over a cross in the 14th minute that allowed Giftopoulos to tap in the goal.

Romo forced up a shot in the 18th minute that resulted in a save and Jose Fuentes had an attempt six minutes later that was sent wide before Gonzaga added to its total in the 27th minute when Denis Kalamar connected with a header off a cross from White.

UIC had the only chances the remainder of the first half as Kyle Hamann had his shot go wide and Todd and Cristian Sanchez were blocked.

Into the second half, the Bulldogs were positioned with a corner kick six minutes in and took advantage of it as Jake Kempf sent it in and Jalen Crisler headed the ball into the back of the net. They were able to take two more shots before forcing Putna to make two saves in 60 seconds.

The Flames were held without a shot until the 75th minute when Todd had an attempt go wide. Dimitris Silvestridis came back shortly after and had his shot blocked.

UIC pressed on in the final 10 minutes and had two shots on target. Strantzalis put up the first attempt that forced a save and Domiciano then established a chance that was stopped with six minutes remaining, but it would be the final shot of the game despite earning two corner kicks.

The Flames will return to Chicago to prepare for their first home match of the season Friday when they host Marquette at Flames Field at 7 p.m. CT.
