CHICAGO – The UIC men's soccer team (0-1-1) will play at Flames Field for the first time this season as it hosts Marquette (1-1-0) and Denver (1-0-1) in a pair of weekend matches. The Flames are slated to take on the Golden Eagles on Friday at 7 p.m. CT before returning Sunday to face the Pioneers at 7 p.m.
UIC produced a 0-1-1 output during opening weekend against San Diego State (Aug. 26) and Gonzaga (Aug. 28) in Spokane, Wash. The Flames first played to a 1-1 draw with the Aztecs and then dropped a 4-1 decision to the host Bulldogs.
Max Todd has scored both goals for UIC this season and owns a team-high five shots with three on goal, as
Sasha Simon has added one assist. Twelve players have contributed to the team's 19 shots, with
Dimitris Strantzalis,
Cristian Sanchez,
Oscar Gonzalez,
Yuri Domiciano and
Gonzalo Romo each putting one shot on goal in addition to Todd's three.
Andrew Putna has played all 200 minutes in goal for the Flames and has made eight saves.
Marquette carries a 1-1-0 record after suffering a 4-0 loss to Kentucky (Aug. 26) and picking up a 4-0 victory over Northern Illinois (Aug. 29). Luke Prpa leads the offense with two goals and two assists off five shots, as Jan Maertins and Connor Alba have also scored for the Golden Eagles. Mac Wheeler and Luis Barraza have each played a complete game in goal, making a combined three saves and Wheeler taking the shutout win.
UIC is 4-4-0 in the all-time series with Marquette, with the last meeting coming in 2012 when the Golden Eagles took a 1-0 win at home.
Denver heads to Chicago with a 1-0-1 record and will be faced with Northwestern prior to Sunday's match. During the first weekend of competition, the Pioneers played to a 1-1 draw with Monmouth before they responded with a 1-0 win over Rutgers. Graham Smith and Alex Underwood own the goals for Denver, with Underwood and Andre Shinyashiki taking a team-high seven shots each. Nick Gardner has controlled the goal with one shutout, nine saves and a 0.45 goals-against-average.
The Flames are 1-2-0 all-time with the Pioneers while this will be the first time the team's meet in the Windy City. They last faced each other in 2014 in Denver, with the home team pulling away with the 1-0 victory.
