CHICAGO- The UIC men's gymnastics concluded its 47
th annual Windy City Invitational Saturday evening inside the UIC Pavilion. The Flames finished the night with a score of 360.250, while Illinois took the crown with 412.150.
"I'm proud that this tradition has lasted 47 years," said head coach
Charley Nelson. "The crowd here supports it really well and it really is a great event to have."
Prior to the meet, senior Alex Dumstorf was presented with the Edward J. Saleh Memorial Award and Scholarship. The honor is given to a UIC gymnast who best exemplifies academic and athletic excellence representing the UIC men's gymnastics program.
Senior
Christopher Root led the Flames in three of his events posting a 12.400 on pommel horse, a 13.100 on rings and 12.900 on high bar. Dumstorf was a team best on floor and parallel bars with his scores of 13.200 and 12.800, respectively.
The Freshmen class stepped up filling in spots all over the line up for their college debuts. Freshman
Satchel Hudson and Dalai Jamiyankhuu earned the top score for the Flames on vault with a 13.200, while sophomore
Wes Diveney followed with his score of 13.050. Fellow freshman
Asad Jooma tallied a 12.900 on floor tying with Hudson on the event.
"Were a young team and just this week we lost some of our key players due to injuries," said Nelson, "but it gave some other guys some opportunities and half our lineup was freshmen. The talent is there and they responded very well to a high pressure situation."
The Flames will return to action next weekend when they travel to Columbus, Ohio to face Ohio State on Friday (Jan. 20) inside the St. John Arena.
