CHICAGO -- UIC will hit the road this weekend, where the Flames have won twice in three Horizon League contests this season, and head to Green Bay, Wis., to meet the Green Bay Phoenix on Thursday, Feb. 2. The first of two meetings between the two schools during the final month of the regular season will tip at 7 p.m. and air on ESPN3. it will also be available on the WatchESPN app.
The Flames (11-11, 4-5 Horizon League) have continued to get strong contributions from a slew of underclassmen. UIC is the youngest and least experienced of 351 Division I teams, according to
KenPom.com. The team averages 0.72 years of experience on the roster, while Green Bay (13-9, 7-3 Horizon League)Â has the Horizon League's eldest bunch (14th overall) with 2.34 years of playing experience. The Flames do not have a senior on the active roster at this time, while five freshmen (
Godwin Boahen,
Tarkus Ferguson,
Dominique Matthews,
Marcus Ottey and
K.J. Santos) have teamed up to score 64 percent of UIC's points through its nine Horizon League games.
Ferguson leads the Flames with 13.0 points per game during Horizon League play, but the Belleville, Ill., native has shown that he can do much more than score. He ranks second among all Horizon League players with 5.0 assists per game in conference play and third overall in all games with 4.1. Over his team's last four games, Ferguson has averaged 6.8 helpers per game. He notched a game-high six assists in meeting with Milwaukee (Jan. 17), Valparaiso (Jan. 22) and Northern Kentucky (Jan. 27) before matching a career high with nine against Wright State last time out. The guard was one of four Flames in double figures against the Raiders with 14 points and he added 10 rebounds to secure his third double-double in nine Horizon League games, while narrowly missing out on the second triple-double in UIC history.
Speaking of triple-doubles, Boahen, who accomplished the feat with 13 points, 12 rebounds and 11 assists against Roosevelt on Dec. 22, has elevated his game of late, as well. The Toronto, Ontario, Canada, native averaged 16.5 points per game during the team's recent two-game homestand. He began the weekend by matching a career high with 19 points against the Norse on Friday, while also collecting a personal-best four steals for the second time in his young UIC tenure. On Sunday against Wright State, Boahen posted 14 points, all in the first half. He is currently tied for second in the Horizon League, shooting 42.5 percent from beyond the arc this season. In the last four games Boahen was banked home 9-of-17 attempts from deep, a clip of nearly 53 percent.
Matthews, a redshirt freshman, has been a boon to the second unit this season. Since a win at Cleveland State on Jan. 12, the Chicagoan is averaging a team-best 12.7 points per game. He's been in double figures in five of the six games and scored a career-high 21 points in an overtime victory at Youngstown State on Jan. 14. Matthews ranks sixth among Horizon League players in 3-point shooting in conference games, connecting at a clip of 43.8 percent (14-of-32).
Green Bay is 7-2 at the Resch Center this season and it has only lost once there during conference play, a 92-89 defeat against Youngstown State on Jan. 20. The Phoenix is led offensively by Charles Cooper and his 13.6 points per game. Despite his status as the team's leading scorer, Cooper has started only 12 of the 21 games he has played. His last start came in that game against the Penguins on Jan. 20. The Gary, Ind., native has upped his scoring average to 15.1 ppg in League play. He is also tied for the team lead with 5.3 rebounds per game.
