Wright State (10-7, 5-3 HL) got a 55th-minute goal amid frenzied action in front of the Flames' goal, and the Raiders made it stand up as they withstood a late barrage to hold on for a 1-0 win Saturday evening at Flames Field. The Flames fall to 6-12 overall and 4-4 in conference play. Thanks to Oakland's win over league-leading IUPUI earlier in the day, the final game of the regular season between UIC and Oakland next Friday looms as a potential winner-take-all match for the final spot in the Horizon League tournament.
Match Highlights
- Khayam Answers the Bell: Tara Khayam was tested in the third minute when Wright State was awarded a corner kick. The Raiders pinballed the ball around in the box and got a header attempt toward the net, but Khayam was able to make a play.
- Douglas Nearly Misses Twice: Tamae Douglas forged two opportunities in the first half. In the 22nd minute, she created a good angle past a defender and sent a shot just past the far post. Eleven minutes later she had the ball in space and again moved past her defender to put a heavy shot on net, which went high.
- Raiders Score on the Rebound: Wright State controlled the early proceedings of the second half and scored the game's only goal for their efforts. Sent in on a corner, the ball bounded to Lexie Ulrich, whose header was saved by a Flames defender. But on the rebound, Mattie Cutts headed the ball past the defense and into the net.
- Flames Frustrated, Miss Oppurtunity: Perhaps UIC's best chance of the evening came in the 67th minute. Bekah Allen sent a nice cross into the box, where several teammates were waiting. Though multiple Flames touched the ball, none could line up a shot and the team remained scoreless.
- Wright State Back Line Stands Tall: As the Flames scrambled for the equalizer in the final minutes, they had several opportunities for the game-tying goal. Shots by Olivia Everin and Autumn Rasmussen were blocked by Raiders in front of the net in a sequence typical of the frustrating luck UIC faced while on the attack.
