CHICAGO – The UIC women's volleyball team (15-9, 6-5 HL) defeated Horizon League-foe Green Bay (10-12, 6-5 HL) on Friday evening in the Flames Athletic Center. Facing a 2-1 deficit, the Flames rallied to take the final two sets, recording their first win against the Phoenix since Oct. 24, 2014.
Match Highlights
- Set One: The Flames jumped out to an 8-3 early thanks to an offensive surge from Kyisha Hunt, Manuela Conte, Alexandria Hicks and Alexandra Drosopoulou. The Phoenix went on to take six of the next seven, tying the match at nine apiece.
- Set One: From that point, the score matched up nine times, until the Flames took six straight to lead 21-16. The Green Bay offense put a stop to UIC's run, but quickly committed two errors to give the Flames a 23-18 advantage. A kill from Hicks and another Green Bay error would finish the set in favor of the Flames, 25-18.
- Set Two: Green Bay turned the tables on the Flames quickly, taking set two by an astounding 25-9.
- Set Three: Green Bay continued to dominate at the start of set three, owning a 17-8 lead before the Flames chipped away at the lead with four unanswered points, 17-12.
- Set Three: The Flames were unable to overcome the Phoenix, as set three went to Green Bay 25-17.
- Set Four: UIC took a 6-0 lead to start the fourth, including a point earned off the foot of Drosopoulou, and eventually extended the lead to nine, 17-8. Â
- Set Four: The Phoenix grabbed the next three, 17-11, but the Flames responded with the next four to lead by 10, 21-11.
- Set Four: Green Bay was unable to string together more than a pair of points, allowing UIC to tie the match with a 25-16 victory. The Flames outhit the Phoenix by a .387-.094 margin in the frame, and registered 14 kills to Green Bay's nine.
- Set Five: The tiebreaker was nothing short of exciting, with eight tied scores and UIC refusing to surrender the lead.
- Set Five: Tied at 10, the Flames' offense was relentless, registering all six of their final points off of kills. Ali Witt, Drosopoulou, Hunt and Hicks recorded the final six as UIC needed an extra point to put Green Bay away for good, 16-14.
Facts and Figures
- After a week away from action, Conte was back in the lineup on Friday, recording her seventh double-double of the season with a team-high 20 digs and 11 kills.
- Setter Kaliegh Skopal earned her third double-double of the season with 10 digs and a team-high 28 assists.
- Drosopoulou notched her sixth double-digit kill effort with 12 kills. The freshman also added nine digs defensively.
- Hicks also terminated 12, while hitting at a clip of .257 (12k-3e-35a).
- Hunt took down nine feeds, Witt terminated seven, and Sarah Daneliak recorded six kills as the Flames evenly distributed the ball across the court.
- Libero Carla Salvato dug out 18 for the defense, while setter Nicole Johnson dug out six alongside 24 assists.
