Flames’ Season Ends in #HLWSOC Quarterfinals

UIC caps program’s fourth season with record seven wins

DAYTON, Ohio – UIC (7-13-0, 5-4-0 HL) saw its fourth competitive season come to a close Monday night as it dropped a 2-1 decision as the No. 5 seed to No. 4 Wright State (12-7-0, 6-3-0 HL) in the Quarterfinals of the Horizon League Championship at Alumni Field.

Match Highlights
  • Douglas Does It: The Flames used a set piece to their advantage in the 21st minute as Olivia Everin sent in a corner kick and had it connect with head of Tamae Douglas to push the ball into the back of the net for the program's first ever postseason goal and the 1-0 lead.
  • Flames Hold Strong: Possession continued to be in favor of UIC the remainder of the first half but it was only able to generate three more attempts, with two coming from Pallo and another from Birkenhead.
  • DiCanio Up to the Challenge: The Raiders only tabbed four shots in the first 45 minutes but had two of those attempts reach on goal, forcing Annie DiCanio to come up and make the stops on both.
  • Everin to Douglas, Part Two: Following a shot on goal for Emily Valentine, Everin and Douglas nearly connected for their second goal as Everin took the ball along the right side and passed it to Douglas in the middle of the box, but the WSU keeper came up with a diving save.
  • Raiders Find the Equalizer: In the 59th minute, Wright State found the game-tying goal as Niki Romero sent in a cross that reached Destiny Johnson to score from six yards out.
  • Wright State Takes the Lead: After Tara Khayam came up with a big-time save in the 78th minute, the Raiders pounced on the rebound and Sarah Colvin shot the ball from 35 yards out that went in for the eventual game-winner.
  • No Giving Up: The final 10 minutes of play showed the persistence of UIC as it turned out six shots and was awarded with three corner kicks. Four of the chances came as saves on chances from Douglas, Valentine, Janai Cedeno and Madison Pollard. Pollard's came in the final 10 seconds and nearly went in, but a WSU defender deflected the ball off the crossbar.
