Flames Open Homestand Against Indiana Northwest

First of Four Straight Games at UIC Pavilion

UIC will try to get back in the win column as it hosts Indiana Northwest at UIC Pavilion.  The Flames enter play at 3-3, having alternated wins and losses throughout the first six games of the season.  They'll face IUN (6-5) for the first time in program history at 4:00 Wednesday afternoon.

The RedHawks will be the fourth Indiana-based team the Flames have played.  All three previous contests have been Flames wins.  Victorious in their last home game, the Flames will look to make it two in a row at UIC Pavilion for the first time since Dec. 22-28, 2015.

Starting Five
  • Gabryelle Johnson tied her career high with 13 points on Saturday against Bradley, despite playing a season low 21 minutes with foul trouble.  She is the Flames' leading rebounder, and fourth in the Horizon League, with 7.8 per game.
  • Johnson's limited minutes gave freshman Jada Nneji a chance to play for an extended period.  Nneji responded with four points, four steals, a blocked shot – all season highs – and three points.
  • The Flames are playing defense at a high level.  They are ranked 17th in the nation in scoring defense, allowing just 53.47 points per game.  Their field goal percentage defense of .332 is good for 12th in the country.  UIC forces the most turnovers (20.0 per game) in the Horizon League.
  • Taylor Toney missed a free throw for the first time in five games against Bradley.  It broke a streak of 17 straight makes.  She has still made 21 of her last 22 foul shots, including a team record 12-for-12 performance against Fort Wayne Nov. 21.
  • Catera Etheridge, Brittany Byrd, Taylor Toney, Gabryelle Johnson, and Teodora Zagorac have started every game this season.  Four of them (all except Zagorac) are in the Horizon League's top nine in minutes per game.  Toney leads everyone with 35.3 minutes per game, and Byrd is third at 34.0.
Last Time Out
  • UIC dropped an in-state rivalry game at Bradley, 58-48, on Saturday.
  • The Flames fought back from a five point deficit to tie the game twice in the third quarter.
  • Bradley went on a 13-0 run that lasted until 2:18 remained in the game.  The Flames scored 10 of the game's final 14 points.
  • Brittany Byrd scored nine points and led the Flames with eight rebounds.
  • The Flames shot a very respectable 80% from the free throw line, but only had 15 attempts.  Bradley went to the line 30 times and made 20.
RedHawk Rumblings
  • Playing its third game in four days, Indiana Northwest topped Holy Cross, 86-80 in overtime, on Nov. 27.
  • Chloe Salman had a career high 26 points, including going 4-for-5 on three pointers, and was named AAI Player of the Week.
  • Grayce Roach, who had been leading the team with 24.3 points per game, is out for the season with an injury.
  • IUN is shooting over 40% on three pointers, and nearly one of every three shots they attempt is from long distance.
  • The teams have one common opponent, Bethel.  UIC defeated Bethel in the season opener, 66-46, while IUN lost to the Pilots 55-44 on Nov. 17.
  • The RedHawks will be playing their second of back-to-back games, as they have a road contest at Indiana-South Bend Tuesday night.
