UIC Reigns From Deep, Falls Short at Oakland

Flames buried 12 3-pointers against the Golden Grizzlies Sunday

ROCHESTER, Mich. --  UIC scored 36 points from beyond the arc Sunday, but the Flames did not have quite enough firepower to outlast the Oakland Golden Grizzlies Sunday afternoon, falling 87-75.

UIC (14-14, 7-8 Horizon League) shot 46.2 percent (12-of-26) from 3-point range  in the game. It marked the seventh time this season that the Flames hit double-digit shots from downtown, and the fifth time in the last six games. Both Tarkus Ferguson and Kyle Guice matched career highs with four triples apiece.

Center Tai Odiase led the way inside for UIC with 16 points on 8-of-10 from the field. The Glenwood, Ill., native also cleared a career-high 14 rebounds for the Flames to lead all players on the glass Sunday.

How It Happened
  • After Oakland scored the game's first four points, UIC countered with five unanswered thanks to a 3-pointer from K.J. Santos and a driving layup by Ferguson. Oakland then used its own 10-0 run to take a nine-point lead, its largest of the half.
  • The Flames chipped away and on a 3-pointer from Ferguson, it was only a two-point game with 9:24 to go in the opening period. The Golden Grizzlies pushed their lead back to five, but soon a deep triple from Dominique Matthews chopped the deficit down to just a point with a shade under eight minutes left in the half.
  • Oakland led by seven points with 5:15 to go in the first before Godwin Boahen stepped up and knocked down a wide open 3-pointer after Odiase snared one of his four offensive rebounds and found his teammate on the right wing. Jalen Hayes countered with a layup for the Golden Grizzlies, but Guice splashed one in from downtown before Odiase hit a flying one-hander to get back within one once again.
  •  The Golden Grizzlies led by four at the break, 38-34.
  • Odiase opened the scoring 30 seconds into the second half before Oakland used 12-point surge to build a 14-point lead.
  • An acrobatic layup from Marcus Ottey and another 3-pointer from the sharpshooting Guice made it a single-digit gap once again with about 15 minutes to go.
  • Each time the Golden Grizzlies looked to run away, the Flames countered with a run that but themselves back within striking distance, however UIC could not get closer than nine points with just over 11 minutes left on the clock.
 Beyond The Box Score
  • Sunday's game broke a streak of six consecutive UIC games that were decided by five points or less. The Flames went 3-3 in those contests.
  • UIC's 12 3-pointers were the most since it knocked down a season-high 15 shots from downtown at Milwaukee on Feb. 4. It was the seventh time this season, and the fifth time in six games that the Flames buried at least 10 triples.
  • Both Ferguson and Guice matched career highs with four 3-pointers. The pair combined to shoot 57.1 percent (8-of-14) Sunday from downtown.
  • UIC's nine steals were the most since hitting that number on Jan. 12 at Cleveland State. It is the fifth time this season that the Flames have hit that mark. Ferguson, Ottey and Matthews each had two at Oakland.
  • The Flames used 14 offensive rebounds to lead to 18 second-chance points. On the other end, Oakland tallied only three second-chance points on seven offensive boards.
  • Odiase earned his team-best sixth double-double of the season. It was his second against Oakland and fourth in Horizon League play. The junior also blocked two shots for the Flames.
  • Santos finished with career highs in both rebounds (10) and assists (5). He played the game with his sister, Sidney, in attendance. The latter is a member of Oakland's women's basketball team.
 What's Next?
  • The Flames will remain return to Chicago for a matchup on Tuesday night against the Green Bay Phoenix at the UIC Pavilion at 7 p.m. CT. It will be the final home game of the 2016-17 regular season.
  • UIC was edged by the Phoenix in its trip to Green Bay earlier this month, 84-80. Five Flames scored in double figures that evening, led by Dominique Matthews' then-career-high 22 points off the bench.
  • The squad will spend the final weekend of the regular season on the road with games at Northern Kentucky, Friday, and Wright State, Sunday.
