CHICAGO- The UIC men's gymnastics team heads into its first and only co-ed meet of the season on Sunday when it welcomes No. 7 Nebraska to the UIC Pavilion at 2 p.m. CT. Competing alongside their fellow Flames will be the women's gymnastics team, set to host Western Michigan for their last home meet of the season before they prepare to host the MIC Conference Championships.
"Things get real on Sunday," said head coach
Charley Nelson. "We move to the point of the season where we pull the safety net. There's no score to drop anymore and every score counts. I think that will bode well for the Flames."
The Flames last encountered the Cornhuskers during the 2015 season at the John Roethlisberger Iceberg Invite; UIC walked away with a final score of 402.800 to Nebraska's 422.050.
Last time UIC saw action was on Saturday, February 11 when they took on William and Mary at the annual Peach Tree Invitational in Atlanta, Ga. UIC finished the day with a final score of 376.950 to the Tribe's total of 394.700.
That Saturday, senior co-captain
Alexander Dumstorf led the way for the Flames scoring team bests on floor (14.200), pommel horses (11.800) and parallel bars (12.800). Senior
Jacob Thurber followed Dumstorf on floor after tallying a 13.300. Dumstorf currently ranks third in the conference on floor with an average score of 13.637.
Senior and fellow co-captain
Christopher Root was a team best on rings and high bar earning a 13.800 and 13.150, respectively. Freshman
Victor Bello's score of 13.400 on vault was the team high followed by freshman
Satchel Hudson.
"I expect a lot of consistency the rest of the season and that should allow us to match up well with our foes," said Nelson. "Nebraska is going to be tough, but I think we can hand with them on several events to keep it close."
