CHICAGO – Sophomore
Mikailla Northern grabbed her fifth all-around title of the season with a career-high 39.325 Sunday afternoon in the UIC Pavilion. The Flames earned their second-highest team total of the season, despite falling 195.300-194.200.
"Of course the highlight of the day was Miki's all-around performance," co-head coach
Peter Jansson said. "She had next to perfect routines on vault, bars and floor. She absolutely obliterated the competition when it came to all-around and there were two other 39.000 all-arounders as well."
Northern tied her career-high 9.850 on vault to take home the top spot in the first rotation.
Allison Broad tied for fifth with a 9.725 as the next Flames finisher, followed by
Katie Snyder (9.625) and
Toni Alicke (9.600) in eighth and ninth, respectively.
The Flames moved on to bars for the second rotation, where Northern once again grabbed a career-high mark (9.875) alongside her second event title of the afternoon.
Nicole Szabo notched a season-best 9.800 on the apparatus to tie for second alongside
Riley Cholod.
UIC put together a season-best 48.775 team score on beam in the third rotation, as Alicke,
Jenna Squillo and Daniella Maciel's each recorded a 9.775 to land in a five-way-tie for fourth. The 9.775 was a career-best for Squillo and Alicke, and Maciel's second-highest of the season.Â
The Flames put together their second-highest floor total of the season in the final rotation, a 48.900.
Abby Hasanov matched last week's career-high 9.850 to tie for first alongside Northern, who earned a season-best on the event. Alicke scored a 9.725, while Maciel brought in a 9.700.
"It was the meet of two tales," co-head coach
Peter Jansson said. "We had a fantastic back half, with some of our highest team scores of the year both on beam and floor, and those came alongside some of our best performances of the year on those two events."
"Overall, we're happy to have another score above 194.00," Jansson continued. "But I also think it's safe to say vault and bars are much better than that, and had those events been solid, we could have been right there with them."
The Flames will kick off a three-meet road series next weekend with the Illinois Classic on Sunday, March 5.
