KALAMAZOO, Mich. – The UIC women's tennis team (2-2) suffered a 7-0 loss at the hands of Western Michigan (5-2) Sunday morning at West Hill Athletic Club.
The Broncos came out to grab the first point in doubles after winning at the second and third positions.
Rachel Le Comber and
Stefana Vasic first dropped a 6-0 decision at No. 3 before the point was clinched for WMU as
Georgie Sanders and
Melika LeBlanc fell in a 6-4 final at No. 2.
The match at No. 1 featuring
Oana Manole and
Miranda Rodriguez Diaz de Leon went unfinished with the pair ahead 5-4.
Despite four singles matches going to three sets, the Flames could not find the answer to the persistence of the Broncos.
Manole grabbed her first set at No. 1 but eventually took a 2-6, 6-2, 6-3 loss to Melina Lyubomirova. While competing at No. 3 and No. 4, respectively, LeBlanc and Zuzu each collected the first set but LeBlanc went down to Tracy Kuhle, 3-6, 7-5, 6-4, and Zuzu fell to Katja Fevralev, 4-6, 6-3, 6-4. Le Comber came back from being down in her first set at No. 6 but came up short in the final frame to Barbare Eristavi, 6-2, 3-6, 6-2.
Sanders took her match at No.2 to the tiebreaker in the second set but dropped a 6-2, 7-6 (7-3) decision to Olivia Myers. The final match with Rodriguez Diaz de Leon and Denise Azcui at No. 5 was decided in straight sets in a 7-5, 6-4 final.
The Flames will return to the courts at XS Tennis in Chicago next Sunday (Feb. 12) to face Bradley at 10 a.m. CT.
