The Flames (16-18) are one of eight teams remaining in the 2017 CBI after they knocked off the Stony Brook Seawolves at the UIC Pavilion on Thursday, March 16. In addition to the matchup between UIC and George Washington (20-14), three other quarterfinal games will take place Monday night. Loyola (MD) will travel to Coastal Carolina, Rice will host Utah Valley, and Wyoming will play host to UMKC. The four winning teams will be re-bracketed for the semifinals, which are scheduled to begin on Wednesday, March 22.

UIC picked up the program's second postseason win Thursday night by defeating the Stony Brook, 71-69,  in the First Round of the 2017 CBI presented by FIVE FOUR. The Flames led by three at the half and extended their advantage to as many as 19 points in the second half. Stony Brook mounted a furious comeback and pulled to within one possession on multiple occasions in the final minute, but UIC hung on for its first-ever triumph in the College Basketball Invitational.

Dominique Matthews scored a game-high 21 points with a career-high six 3-pointers. In total, five Flames scored at least eight points. Clint Robinson tallied 11 to go along with six rebounds off the bench, while Tarkus Ferguson flirted with a triple-double as he registered eight points, seven rebounds and a game-high 10 assists. With those 10 helpers, Ferguson moved into 10th place on UIC's single-season assist list with 161. That is the highest number for a first-year player since Martell Bailey tallied 162 in the 2001-02 season.

In GW's first round win over Toledo, Tyler Cavanaugh poured in 29 points on 10-of-15 shooting including 5-of-8 from three, while also adding seven boards, a block, steal and assist. He has reached the 20-point plateau in six of the last seven games. The Colonials are aiming to win a second consecutive postseason championship after last year capturing the NIT title, the first postseason championship in program history. GW knocked off another Horizon League foe, Valparaiso, in the title game at Madison Square Garden in New York City.
