Flames Take Split on Final Day of Hoosier Classic

Watts turns out five hits Sunday

BLOOMINGTON, Ind. – The UIC softball team (13-13) concluded play at the Hoosier Classic on Sunday as it posted a 4-1 victory over Bowling Green (14-15) before it was shutout by Indiana (13-14) at Andy Mohr Field. The Flames were able to cap the weekend with a 3-1 record having swept the Falcons and split with the Hoosiers.

Over the course of the two games, UIC put up 11 hits with a team-high five from Lexi Watts, who also scored two runs and picked up a RBI. Of the five other players to acquire a tally, Savannah Soppet led the group with two hits.

It will be a quick turnaround for the Flames as they now get set for a doubleheader Tuesday afternoon against Illinois at 1 p.m. in Champaign, Ill.

UIC 4, Bowling Green 1

UIC was able to turn out four runs over the course of three innings to slide past Bowling Green. The Flames put together nine hits with a team-high three from Watts, followed by Soppet with two. Of the runs scored, Watts, Tiana Mack-Miller and Jasmine Willis tallied RBI.

Allie Trudeau picked up her fourth start of the season and threw her second complete game to garner her second win with one strikeout, two walks and just five hits allowed.

For the second-straight game, UIC was able to put a run on the board in the first inning. Watts led off with a single, stole second, advanced on a fly out and scored as Mack-Miller reached on an error.

After Soppet was held on base following a double in the second, BGSU was able to equalize the score as a double, sacrifice bunt and walk put runners at the corners before a wild pitch allowed one to score.

The Flames went back ahead in the third as Watts led off the frame and reached on an error before she swiped her second base of the game. After Mack-Miller walked, Willis singled into left, allowing Watts to score and moving each runner up a base.

With one out in the fourth, Alice Fitzpatrick doubled and moved up to third as Taylor Cairns got on with a bunt single. Watts then came up to the plate and singled to score Fitzpatrick. On the next play, Kayla Wedl reached on an error that allowed Cairns to come in for the 4-1 lead.

UIC left four runners on base across the fifth and sixth innings while the Falcons tried to rally in the bottom of the seven but they left two in scoring position after reaching with a single and an error.

Indiana 4, UIC 0

UIC could not answer the four runs scored by Indiana as it was limited to just two hits, both from Watts. The Flames scattered five runners on base as Mack-Miller, Willis and Jennah Speth all picked up walks.

Elaine Heflin threw 4.2 innings after getting the start and tabbed two strikeouts with four walks as she faced 25 batters. Lindsay Melson entered the game in the fifth and finished with one strikeout and one walk with no hits given up.

The Hoosiers quickly went ahead in the bottom of the first as back-to-back singles and a double led to a run scoring before another came in on a groundout. They threatened again in the third as they loaded the bases but they would be left that way.

While UIC put just three base runners on across the first five innings, Indiana came out in the bottom of the fifth to add its final two runs as it put two on and a double cleared the bases for the 4-0 advantage.

The Flames made an attempt in the sixth as Watts led off with her second hit of the game and eventually moved to third after a pair of wild pitches, but she would held on base along with Speth after drawing a walk.
