UIC Deals Shutout to Sweep Green Bay

Trudeau allows just one hit in six innings as Flames shutout Phoenix for second time

CHICAGO – The UIC softball team (29-18, 16-2 HL) completed their fourth conference series sweep of the season as it shut out Green Bay (2-25, 1-12 HL) for the second time in a 3-0 decision Wednesday afternoon at Flames Field.

The Flames put together seven hits behind the bats of Jasmine Willis and Jennah Speth, who both homered and earned all three RBI. Lexi Watts was the lone player to have more than one hit with two as she also stole her 24th base of the season to tie the program record for career steals with 61.

Allie Trudeau gave up just one hit in six innings as she collected her seventh win on the year behind five strikeouts and one walk. Lindsay Melson entered in the seventh but walked one and allowed two hits, setting up Karissa Frazier to come in the circle and collect her third save as she forced the final two outs.

After leaving three on base over the first three innings, UIC scored the first run of the game in the fourth as Willis took the ball over the wall in left field for her fourth home run of the season and the 1-0 lead. Kayla Wedl then reached with her 10th double of the year but she would end the frame standing on third.

The Flames put up a two-out rally in the fifth as Savannah Soppet singled and Speth followed with her sixth homer of the season to increase the lead to 3-0. They would leave two on base in the sixth as Alice Fitzpatrick and Ria Smith both walked.

The Phoenix tried to pull off the rally in the seventh as they loaded the bases on a pair of singles and a walk, but a strikeout and a groundout would end the game.

UIC will have a break from action this weekend before it returns to Flames Field next week for a pair of city rivalry matchups. The Flames will first host Loyola Tuesday before welcoming in DePaul Wednesday, with both games set to begin at 4 p.m. CT.
