CHICAGO – UIC (29-9, 16-3 in Horizon) posted its seventh shutout of the season in a 7-0 nonconference win over Chicago State Tuesday afternoon at Curtis Granderson Stadium. The 29 victories for the Flames are the most since also winning 29 games in 2015 (29-22-1).
Ryan Campbell (1-0) made his first career collegiate start and earned the win, allowing four hits with four strikeouts over 5.0 shutout innings. The bullpen trio of
Noah Masa,
Charlie Cerny and
Alex Padilla tossed a combined four innings of one hit baseball.
How It Happened
The Flames pounced on Chicago State quickly with four runs in the first inning.
David Cronin walked and stole second base.
Cody Bohanek also walked and
Rob Calabrese reached base after being hit by pitch to load the bases.
Scott Ota reached on an error by first baseman Rick Salazar that allowed Cronin and Bohanek to score.
Ricardo Ramirez doubled to the gap in left center scoring Ota and Calabrese.
Ryan Campbell yielded four singles in five innings of work and retired 13 of the final 15 batters he faced including eight in a row. In the seventh inning UIC plated three more runs to put it away.
Mickey McDonald led off the inning with an infield single and advanced to second on a sacrifice bunt from
Thomas Norton. With two out,
Cody Bohanek walked and
Rob Calabrese laced a two-run double down the left field line scoring McDonald and Bohanek.
Scott Ota followed with a single up the middle as Calabrese came around to score.
The Flames bullpen retired Chicago State in order in the sixth, seventh and eighth inning before giving up a two-out double in the ninth inning.
