Flames Take 4-2 Loss at Wright State

UIC win streak halted at five

DAYTON, Ohio – The UIC softball team (31-19, 16-3 HL) had its five-game win streak come to a halt Friday afternoon as it suffered a 4-2 loss to Wright State (16-25, 10-6 HL) at the WSU Softball Field. Game two of the scheduled doubleheader was postponed in the third inning with the Raiders leading 2-0, and will resume Saturday at 2 p.m. CT with the finale to follow.

Elaine Heflin threw the first 2.1 frames but gave up six hits and had Wright State plate all of its runs before Allie Trudeau entered to finish the game as she allowed just two hits and struck out two.

The Flames were held to two runs off four hits, and were offensively silenced through the opening five frames. Lexi Watts recorded the only hit for the Flames through the first five innings, knocking a bunt to the pitcher's mound in the third.

The Raiders attacked early, taking advantage of a UIC fielding error in the first inning to draw a 1-0 lead. Wright State brought in two more in the following inning off a triple by Honnah Susor, and would take a 4-0 lead in the third off a pair of singles and another Flames error.

Taylor Cairns singled with one out in the top of the sixth to give the Flames their first runner since the third, but was out at second on a fielder's choice off the bat of Watts. Tiana Mack-Miller walked to put runners on first and second, and a passed ball coupled with a throwing error allowed Watts to score.

Jasmine Willis doubled in the seventh with one out, and Kayla Wedl drew a walk to bring up Skylee James, who singled to load the bases. Ria Smith entered the game to pinch hit and reached on a fielder's choice to allow Willis to score and cut the Raiders' lead to two, but a line out ended the rally.
