BOWLING GREEN, Ohio -- UIC trailed late in the third set of its final match at the Hampton Inn Invitational Saturday afternoon, but the Flames roared back to knock off Duquesne and sweep the Dukes, 3-0 (25-22, 25-13, 27-25).
UIC (2-1) utilized a balanced offensive attack in Saturday's victory with four players notching at least seven kills apiece in the three-set triumph.
Kyisha Hunt and
Ali Witt topped the team with nine kills each, while
Alexandria Hicks and
Sarah Daneliak tallied seven apiece. The Flames also owned the net defensively as they accumulated a season-high nine blocks to just one for Duquesne. Individually, Witt led the way with five blocks, including an effort with Hunt that sealed the match.
The first game was tight throughout with neither side distancing itself by more than four points at any juncture, however UIC never trailed. Head coach
Justin Ingram's squad had the first chance to end the game after a Duquesne attacking error, but Maddie Bazelak registered a kill for the Dukes to get back within two and keep hope alive. Hicks squashed the Duquesne momentum with a kill off an assist from
Kaliegh Skopal to finish off the 25-22 win.
The Flames controlled the second game for almost the entirety. The score was knotted at five points apiece when UIC ripped off a 10-2 to take an eight-point lead which it would not relinquish. Later the Flames were ahead by as many as 10 points in the final stages as newcomer
Laney Malloy nearly served out the sequence with the help of a few DU errors and a block from Witt and
Brecken Roe. UIC would go on to win the second set, 25-13, to take a 2-0 lead in the match at the intermission.
Duquesne found itself in the driver's seat of set three with a 17-12 advantage. The Flames steadily chipped away and used a 6-1 run that was capped with an ace from Malloy to even the ledger at 18-18. UIC went back and forth with the Dukes and with the score knotted at 25 points apiece, Skopal found Witt for her ninth and final kill of the day to give the Flames a one point lead before the aforementioned Witt and Hunt's block on Bazelak to end the match.
Witt and
Manuela Conte were each named to the Hampton Inn Invitational All-Tournament Team. Witt averaged 2.42 kills per set and hit a team-best clip of .323 on the weekend. The Crystal Lake, Ill., native also added nine blocks. Conte was impactful on both sides of the net during her first weekend as a Flame. The redshirt freshman tallied 19 kills, 58 digs, four assists, four aces and three blocks for UIC.
UIC returns to Chicago where it will host the UIC Invitational next weekend. The Flames open the three-team tournament against Idaho on Friday, Sept. 1 at 6 p.m. before hosting crosstown rival DePaul on Sept. 2 at 6 p.m. Idaho and DePaul will open the event with a match on Thursday night at the Flames Athletic Center.
