Flames Head North to Tangle With Marquette

Third Straight Big East Opponent Opens Busy Weekend

8/31/2017 11:22:00 AM

Fresh off a thrilling overtime win over DePaul, the UIC men's soccer team (1-1-0) will face its third straight opponent from the Big East when it travels to Milwaukee to take on Marquette (0-1-0) Friday evening.  Kickoff will be at 6:00 pm at Valley Fields.

The Flames showed resilience in coming from two goals down against DePaul Sunday.  A Blue Demon own goal opened the scoring for UIC, and Abel Guzman scored on a penalty kick to level the score.  Neither team would score again in regulation, and the game moved into a second overtime.  At 105:31, Max Todd created some space to get a shot off, and poked it inside the right post for the golden goal.

Marquette comes off an opening loss at Kentucky, 1-0 in overtime.  The Golden Eagles had a flurry of chances to score late in regulation but could not ultimately put the ball in the net.  In the 99th minute, Kentucky scored off a corner kick following a flurry of action in front of the Marquette goal, after which the ball popped free and a Wildcat poked it into the open net.
Opportunities from the Corner
The Flames have been aggressive in the final third, and have earned corner kicks at an impressive rate.  They took 13 corners against DePaul, to the Blue Demons' two, and rank eighth in the NCAA averaging 9.0 corners per game.font>

This will be the 10th renewal of the series between the Flames and the Golden Eagles.  Marquette holds a slim 5-4-0 advantage in the all time matchups, and is 3-1-0 against UIC in Milwaukee.  Marquette prevailed in last season's match at Flames Field, 4-1.  Jose Fuentes scored in the first minute, but Marquette answered three minutes later and added three unanswered goals later in the game.

The Golden Eagles were picked seventh in the Big East preseason poll.  Sophomore Luka Prpa, last season's Big East Freshman of the Year, placed on the preseason All-Big East team.  He finished second in the conference with 26 points, and scored two goals against UIC.
