Flames Take Fifth Straight in 3-0 Win over SDSU

UIC records second-highest team attack percentage on the season

CHICAGO – The UIC women's volleyball team extended its win streak to five on Wednesday night with a 3-0 (25-16, 25-15, 25-23) victory of South Dakota State University. The Flames recorded their second-highest attack percentage as a team (.299) in their fourth sweep on the season.

Kyisha hunt led the offensive attack for UIC, hitting at a clip of .296 with 13 kills. Alexandria hicks totaled 11 attacks, while Manuela Conte also had a strong offensive showing, registering a .353 attack percentage (8k2e-17a) while also adding seven digs.

Horizon League Defensive Player of the Week Carla Salvato continued her defensive streak against SDSU with a match-best 13 digs. Kaliegh Skopal dug out 10 alongside her 24 assists, and Alexandra Drosopoulou collected six digs.

The Flames jumped out to a 5-0 lead to start set one and never looked back. UIC extended its lead to 22-14 late, after a long volley ended in a kill from Alex Drosopoulou. The Flames made their way to game point off a SDSU error and a kill from Manuela Conte. A UIC error and SDSU kill gave the Jackrabbits two final points before a kill from Hunt closed out the first set in favor of UIC, 25-16. 

Set two began with a 12-12 tie, but the Flames ended the set on a 13-3 run to grab the 2-0 lead. An 8-0 streak featuring kills from Sarah Daneliak and Conte and an ace from Kaliegh Skopal made it 20-12. SDSU was able to briefly stop the skid before UIC chipped in another four to come within one, 24-13. The Jackrabbits grabbed another pair of points before Alexandria Hicks took a feed from Skopal to end it, 25-15.

SDSU saw its first lead of the match at the 8-7 mark of the third set, and was able to extend its lead to 13-10. Trailing 18-15 late in the frame, UIC put together three off a Conte kill, a SDSU error and an ace off the hands of Salvato to tie it at 18. The Jackrabbits took the next one, but the Flames were able to take three from Hunt and a pair of SDSU errors. The Jackrabbits tied it at 22, but the Flames were able to take three of the next four to complete the sweep. 

UIC will travel to Edwardsville, Ill. on Friday for its final tournament of the season, the Cougar hosted by SIUE.
