GREEN BAY, Wis. – The UIC women's volleyball team (11-5, 2-1 HL) dropped its first Horizon League match of the season on Saturday afternoon with a 3-1 decision against Green Bay (8-7, 4-0 HL).
Kyisha Hunt went .273 for the Flames offense with a match-high 17 kills, while
Manuela Conte matched her season-high 11 kills for the third time this season.
Alexandra Drosopoulou notched eight kills alongside her career-high 14 digs, while both
Alexandria Hicks and
Ali Witt registered seven kills.
Conte paced UIC's defense with 21 digs, and
Carla Salvato dug out 16. The Flames recorded 10 blocks as a team, six featuring
Sarah Daneliak and five featuring Hicks.
Set one went to the Phoenix, as a four-point streak early on put the Flames in a 10-5 hole. Green Bay hit .462 as a team in the first frame, while holding the Flames offense to a clip of just .156 to take set one 25-14.
Green Bay took an 8-6 lead to start the second frame, but the Flames fought back with five unanswered points to take a 11-8 lead. The Phoenix retaliated, eventually regaining the lead with five points of their own, 14-12. Green Bay extended its lead to four, 18-14, before UIC took six of the next eight to tie the score at 20. The Phoenix took the next three, but UIC followed up with three to match by way of kills from Witt and Drosopoulou alongside a Witt-Hunt block, forcing Green Bay to call a timeout. The Phoenix offense was only able to take one more before kills from Hunt, Conte and another Witt-Hunt block gave the Flames a 26-24 win.
The Phoenix returned from the intermission with a 19-14 lead, and held the Flames off for the remainder of the frame. The Flames made an attempt at a comeback with kills from Hunt and Conte to come within three, 19-16, but UIC would only notch three more points before Green Bay came away with a 25-19 victory.
The Flames started game four with an 11-6 lead, but the Phoenix built a comeback, eventually tying the match at 15. The two teams traded points to tie the match at 18, when the Green Bay offense put up three-straight kills to put the match out of reach for UIC, as the Phoenix went on to win it 25-21.
The Flames will face Milwaukee tomorrow in a rare Sunday matinee with the first serve scheduled for 2 p.m. CT. Â Â
