CHICAGO – The UIC women's basketball team (7-8, 0-4 HL) continues its three-game homestand on Saturday, Jan. 13 with a matchup against Horizon League-foe Detroit Mercy (0-16, 0-5 HL) at 3 p.m. CT in the UIC Pavilion.
Both teams are winless in Horizon League play, while the Flames are also looking to snap a five-game losing streak and record their first win at home since defeating North Texas on Dec. 18.
Starting Five
- Gabryelle Johnson has recorded 10 rebounds in back-to-back games after leading the Flames in the category on Thursday night against Oakland. The senior forward has double-digit boards in five games this season. Johnson also added five assists against the Golden Grizzlies.
- Tylah Lampley made her first start of the season on Thursday versus Oakland, and poured in 14 points for her second-consecutive game in double-digits. The sophomore also posted career-highs in rebounds (7), blocks (4), and became the fourth player this season to record at least five offensive rebounds.
- Brittney Byrd continues to lead all scoring for the Flames, and is fourth in the Horizon League standings with a 16.1 per game average. Byrd led UIC in scoring for her ninth game this season after putting up 18 points against the Golden Grizzlies on Thursday.
- Jada Nneji continues to build her skills, as she posted a season-high five rebounds against Oakland in a season-high 16 minutes of play.
- UIC is second in the Horizon League in offensive rebounds with 15.7 per game, and have out-offensive rebounded their opponents in 13 of 15 games, including Thursday's game against Oakland.Â
Last Time Out
- The Flames kicked off their homestand on Thursday night with a 67-63 loss to Oakland in the UIC Pavilion. Â
- UIC once again built a dramatic comeback from a 10-plus deficit, posting 28 points in the third quarter. Heading into the second half, the Flames trailed 34-22, and were able to hold the Golden Grizzlies to just 13 points while putting up their 28.
- The Flames put up team season-highs in rebounds, grabbing 58 boards, and in blocked shots, stopping eight.
- The two teams came as close as possible in shooting, as the Golden Grizzlies made 32.5 percent of all shots to UIC's 32.4 percent.
Scouting Detroit Mercy
- Detroit Mercy is without a win this season, with a 0-16 record and and 0-5 mark in conference play after falling 90-62 to first-place IUPUI on Thursday.
- The Titans are fourth in the League in blocked shots, averaging 3.5 per game, and are sixth in the Horizon League in defensive rebounds with a 25.3 per game average.
- The Titans best shooting comes from beyond the arc, as they are third overall in three-point field goals made (6.8 per game).
- Brianne Cohen leads the Titans in scoring, and is fifth in the League, averaging 15.4 points per game. Cohen is also the leading rebounder, and her 5.9 boards per game average ranks her 13th in the Horizon League.
- Lexey Tobel presents a threat at the line, as she is fourth in the conference in free throw percentage, making 82.9 percent of her shots from the charity stripe.
