The Flames women's gymnastics team squared off in a dual meet against a frequent rival in Western Michigan. Though the team racked up 193 points for the second straight week, they were edged out by the Broncos, 193.425-193.000. "We took a narrow loss to a MAC team that we will see again this year," co-head coach
Peter Jansson said, referencing the rematch scheduled for March 13.
Rotation 1 – Bars
- Mikailla Northern led the Flames on the bars and finished second overall with a mark of 9.825.
- Toni Alicke was just behind Northern, as the Flames took two of the top three spots and three of the top five.
- Western Michigan, competing on the vault in the first rotation, had the lead after one event.
- "We dug ourselves a hole on bars as the first event as our most experienced bar workers both took a fall," Jansson lamented.
Rotation 2 – Vault
- Kayla Baddeley won an individual event for the second straight week with a 9.775 and a first place showing on the vault.
- The field was very tightly bunched in the final scoring, as Allison Broad, Riley Mahoney, and Katie Snyder were all among a five-way tie for fourth place.
- The Flames added 0.2 to their team score on the vault from last week's season opener.
Rotation 3 – Floor
- Baddeley and Northern each registered a 9.775 to tie for the top score on the team.
- Though the Broncos outscored UIC on the floor, thanks to earning the top two individual spots, the Flames saw an improvement from week 1 with a 0.35 boost.
- "The floor squad and the vaulters took a step forward from last week," Jansson noted. "We fought back and went to the last event with a lead that quickly evaporated as we were not able to perform like last week on beam."
Rotation 4 - Beam
- Baddeley turned in a 9.675 to pace the Flames for the second time on the beam.
- She led a pack of five Flames who placed consecutively from fourth through eighth.
- While the Flames were finishing up on the beam, Western Michigan was competing on the floor exercise. On the floor, they posted two scores of at least 9.800 and outscored the Flames by 1.2 on the final rotation.
All-Around
- Northern posted an all-around score of 38.875 and finished second.
- Ashley Albrecht was the Flames' only other all-arounder. She placed fourth with a total of 38.400.
Up Next
- The Flames' road trip will continue with a journey out west.
- The team will be in Boise, Id. on Friday for a quad meet with host Boise State, Seattle Pacific, and Denver, who is currently ranked #8.
