Women’s Basketball Road Trip Wraps with Cleveland State

Flames seeking first road win since Nov. 21, 2017

CHICAGO – The UIC women's basketball team will wrap up its two-game road trip on Saturday, Jan. 6 with a Horizon League contest against Cleveland State. Tip-off is scheduled for 12:00 p.m. CT.

In addition to their first Horizon League win of the season, the Flames are seeking their first victory on the road since Nov. 21, 2017 against Fort Wayne.

Starting Five
  • Taylor Toney has recorded double-digit scoring efforts in seven-straight games, including Thursday's game against Youngstown State, when she netted 13 points as part of a three-way team high effort.
  • Brittany Byrd is UIC's leading scorer, averaging 14.8 points per game. Byrd also paces the Flames in shot attempts and makes from the field overall as well as from beyond the arc.
  • Gabryelle Johnson leads the Flames in rebounds, averaging 7.3 boards per game. She also is the top offensive rebounder, registering 46 rebounds for the offense.
  • Catera Etheridge came off a career-high performance against IUPUI and recorded her second-straight double-digit effort, as she poured in 10 points on Thursday against the Penguins.
  • The Flames continue to lead the League in turnovers forced, and turned in a positive turnover differential against YSU, despite the loss, and have done so in eight of their 13 games thus far.
Last Time Out
  • The Flames fell 76-63 against the Penguins on Thursday, Jan. 4 in their first Horizon League road contest of the season.
  • Four flames scored in double figures, Brittany Byrd (13), Taylor Toney (13), Gabrielle Johnson (13) and Catera Etheridge (10).
  • Johnson led the battle of the boards for the Flames, recording nine rebounds.
  • UIC attempted 57 field goals to the Penguins' 41, but Youngstown State was more efficient, netting 48.8 percent of their shots compared to 38.6 percent for the Flames.
  • UIC outscored YSU in the paint, 30-20, but a season-high 28 fouls plagued the Flames, as the Penguins had 37 free throw attempts, 28 of which were successful.
Unveiling the Vikings
  • UIC and Cleveland State meet for the first time this season in what will be the Flames' third Horizon League game of the season. The Vikings are 2-1 in the conference thus far, and are in a tie for second in the League's standings.
  • Cleveland State dropped its first conference game of the season on Thursday (Jan. 4) to first-place IUPUI by a margin of 77-64.
  • Ashanti Abshaw, Olivia Voskuhl, Khayla Livingston and Jade Ely all recorded double-digit efforts in the loss, led by Abshaw, who broke the 20-point barrier for her ninth time this season with 21 points.
  • Cleveland State is fourth in the League in field goal percentage (43.6 percent), opponent field goal percentage (38.4 percent) and scoring offense, averaging 67.9 shots per game. The Vikings are third beyond the arc, making 33.1 percent of their threes, while also ranking second in free throws, netting 73.5 percennt of their shots at the line.
