Kavanaugh’s Golden Goal Gives UIC 3-2 (2OT) Win

Bowman, Birkenhead and Kavanaugh score; Flames take fourth win

CHICAGO – For the second straight match, it took extra time to decide the winner at Flames Field as it was UIC to come out on top yet again with a thrilling 3-2 victory in double overtime Wednesday night. Emily Kavanaugh netted the game-winner in the 104th minute to give the Flames their second straight win and fourth victory of the season.

In addition to Kavanaugh's tally, Megan Bowman and Keri Birkenhead also scored on the night. Kavanaugh picked up her second three-point performance of the year as she assisted on Bowman's goal, while Alexis Jakuszewski and Emily Valentine also added helpers.

UIC registered 20-plus shots for the second consecutive match as it garnered 22 on the night, with eight of the attempts reaching on goal. Rebeca Pallo led the squad with five attempts followed by Kavanaugh, Valentine and Tamae Douglas, with the preceding trio tabbing two shots on goal apiece.

Tara Khayam played her third straight complete game and picked up her second win of the season, improving to 2-1-0 in conference play. She came up with three saves against the Phoenix, who attempted 13 shots.

The Flames are now 4-12-1 this season and improve to 3-4-0 in Horizon League action, which places them in fifth place with nine points in the current standings. Green Bay falls to 2-12-1 and are still without a win in conference action at 0-5-1.

HOW IT HAPPENED
  • UIC's attack was strong in the start as it registered four shots in the opening 15 before the 1-0 lead was awarded in the 16th minute. Kavanaugh took the ball off to the left side and toed the goal line before sending in a cross that met Bowman to put it away from five yards out.
  • The Flames had a look at an empty net four minutes later as Douglas beat the approaching keeper but sent it just wide of the net. It would be UIC's last opportunity of the half.
  • Green Bay nearly scored on its fourth shot in the 29th minute as a chance from Nicole Piette was hooked just over the crossbar. The Phoenix then converted in the 41st minute as Kayla Minor sent a long pass to a breaking Alycia Wright, who beat Khayam one-on-one to tie the match at 1-1.
  • Following a shot from distance by Valentine that was saved, the Flames found a break in the 53rd minute that allowed them to regain the lead. Jakuszewski sent a long pass ahead from the right side that connected with Birkenhead, who hung up and took a shot from the inside corner of the 18 and sent it into the opposite corner of the goal for the 2-1 advantage.
  • While UIC looks to hold off Green Bay the rest of the way, it found the game-tying goal yet again. It came late in the second half with three minutes remaining as Mara Pfeilstifter found the rebound off a save made by Khayam on a shot from McKayla Kertscher.
  • The Flames did not give up as they put up an effort to end it in regulation and came close with two minutes to go as Pallo had a shot knock off the crossbar and Bowman headed the rebound but sent it high.
  • In the first overtime session, UIC turned out five shots that all had quality chances to convert but three of the attempts from Douglas (2) and Kavanaugh were saved.
  • After a pair of shots off the mark in double overtime, Kavanaugh took the ball along the left side in the 104th minute and worked her way around the Green Bay defense before she neared the net and unloaded on a shot that went into the near post for the golden goal.

NOTABLES
  • UIC used its same group of starters it saw in its last match against Youngstown State, which resulted in a win.
  • Kavanaugh's goal was her fifth of the season, which leads the team, and fourth in conference play. With her third helper on the year and second three-point performance, she now owns a team-best 13 points, which ties the program records for points in a season.
  • Bowman's and Birkenhead's tallies were both their second of the season as Jakuszewski and Valentine each earned their second assists.
  • The Flames had not registered 20 or more points all season and have now done so in back-to-back matches.

NEXT UP
  • The Flames will make the trek to Rochester, Mich., for their final away match of the regular season Saturday when it takes on Oakland at 12 p.m. CT at the Oakland Soccer Field.
