INDIANAPOLIS -- A pair of seniors led the way Tuesday as the Flames shot a 321 and moved up the leaderboard on the final day to finish fourth in a competitive 10-team field at the Butler Fall Invitational. UIC's
Meghan Kramp finished fifth in the 36-hole tournament at Highland Golf and Country Club, while classmate
Kelly Sterling surged to tie for 15
th place.
"This was good trip for us because it helped us to really establish what are strengths are and identify some of our weaknesses," said UIC head coach
Mat Blair. "The girls and are are all really excited for and really proud of Meghan [Kramp], the mental toughness she showed and her finish, as well as Kelly's last round because she really put everything together."
Kramp entered the day tied for fifth place as one of two players in the field to shoot 6-over-par 76 on Monday. She nearly matched that score with a 7-over-par 77 on Tuesday for a total of 13-over-par 153 to finish fifth overall, a career-best. It was the second top-10 finish of her career and her tally is also tied for the 10
th-best 36-hole score in program history. Kramp finished first among all Horizon League competitors in a group that group included UIC's six entrants, eight players from IUPUI and six more from Green Bay. IUPUI's
Marion DeBove was one shot better than Kramp after one one round before finishing two behind.
A native of Springfield, Ill., Kramp played with consistency throughout the tournament. She finished tied for fourth in the field with 20 pars in 36 holes and she also tied for fourth in par-4 scoring at 7-over par and 4.29 strokes per hole. Kramp tied for the team lead and 12
th in the field with a pair of birdies.
UIC's best round of the day belonged to Sterling. After shooting 13-over-par 83 on Monday, the Mokena, Ill., native roared back to post a score of 6-over-par 76 on Tuesday. It was her best mark in 11 rounds this fall, topping the 77 she posted in the second round of the NKU Fall Classic on Sept. 10. Sterling entered the day tied for 41
st and she ended it by finishing in a tie for 15
th place, her best placement this season. Like Kramp, Sterling notched a pair of below-par scored at Highland this week.
Though she did not count toward the team's total as an individual player, freshman
Stephanie Mroz put together an impressive run Tuesday. She shaved four strokes from round one to round two, finishing with a 9-over-par 79 on Tuesday. The Oak Park, Ill., native led the Flames in par-5 scoring at the Butler Fall Invitational, playing those holes at 2-over par and 5.50 stroke per hole. She also ranked second, behind Kramp, with 18 pars. Mroz finished tied for 21
st on the individual leaderboard.
UIC was one of three Horizon League teams in the field. The Flames finished eight strokes behind IUPUI, which took third place, overall. However, UIC did best the Jaguars by six shots in the second round. Blair's squad topped Green Bay by five total shots during the tournament.
Butler won the event on its home course with an impressive score of 610, 22 shots in front of Indiana State. BU's
