EVANSVILLE, Ind. -- UIC showed improvement nearly across the board on Tuesday as the Flames shot up the leader board and into a tie for 8th place to wrap up the Charles Braun Jr. Intercollegiate at Oak Meadow Country Club in Evansville, Ind. As a team, UIC improved by seven shots from round one to round two and ended with a 659 for the 36-hole event.
Senior
Claudia Stampa continued to play well as she wound down her final fall as a Flame. The San Sebastian, Spain, native signed for a 5-over-par 77 in round two. Combined with a 79 on Monday, Stampa finished at 12-over-par 156, good for a sixth-place finish, the best of her career. Her best finish this season prior to the Braun Intercollegiate came at the Loyola Fall Invitational, where she placed 22
nd. It also marked the second consecutive tournament that UIC had at least one player in the top six after
Meghan Kramp took fifth overall at the Butler Fall Invitational on Oct. 1-2.
Stampa was not the only member of the Flames lineup to improve her total on Tuesday. Freshman
Stephanie Mroz shaved a stroke to come in at 23-over-par 167 for the tournament. She finished one shot ahead of teammate
Kelly Sterling, who had the second-best total of the round with a 9-over-par 81 on Tuesday. She was tied for 40
th along with Kramp.
"I'm really happy with the way that the team finished out this part of the season," said UIC head coach
Mat Blair. "We struggled just a little bit coming down the stretch today, but we got out to a much better start. I'm proud of how we finished and I know we're going to work hard in the offseason to continue to improve as we look forward to the spring."
Horizon League foe IUPUI won the tournament by finishing five strokes ahead of Southern Illinois. IUPUI's Marion DeBove ran away with individual medalist honors with a 2-over-par 146 at Oak Meadow. UIC finished 10 shots in back of another conference team, Northern Kentucky, and five in front of Green Bay.
