Efficient Offense Propels Flames Past Penguins, 3-0

UIC posts ninth-highest single-match attack percentage

CHICAGO – The UIC volleyball team (10-8, 3-2 HL) made quick work of Youngstown State (7-12, 1-5 HL) on Friday evening, toppling the Penguins 3-0 (25-8, 25-18, 25-19). The Flames posted the ninth-highest single-match attack percentage in program history, hitting .381 (49k-9e-105a) as a team.

Match Highlights
  • Set One: An early 6-0 run gave UIC a 9-2 lead, and after a Youngstown State sideout, the Flames quickly took another five, 14-3.
  • Set One: UIC continued to dominate, ending the set with a 25-8 victory. The Flames out killed the Penguins 16-7, with Paola Santiago and Clara Lamb tallying four kills each in the opener.
  • Set Two: The Flames carried the momentum into set two, taking an early 12-6 lead.
  • Set Two: The closest the Penguins would get was three, 18-15, before UIC ran away with the set, 25-18. Santiago kept the offense coming in set two, tacking on seven kills in the second frame alone.
  • Set Three: UIC took the first seven points of set three, five of which were Kiera James kills.
  • Set Three: The Penguins quickly took the next five to come within two, 7-5. UIC had a 10-6 lead when YSU raddled off four in-a-row to tie it at 10.
  • Set Three: Tied at 13, the Flames scored four straight, three of which were more kills from James.
  • Set Three: YSU came within one after a 3-0 run, 19-18, but UIC took the next four, 23-18. The Penguins chipped in one more kill before the Flames ended the match, thanks to a Penguin service error and a Michelle Glover termination.
Facts & Figures
  • The Flames were firing on all cylinders, tallying their highest number of kills in a three set match while also committing a season-low nine errors.
  • Kiera James led with a match-high 16 kills, 11 of which came in set three.
  • Paola Santiago was one kill short of her career-high, tallying 14 terminations. The freshman had her most efficient showing of the year, hitting at a clip of .407 (14k-3e-27a).
  • Clara Lamb killed seven, while Ali Witt and Tatyana Ndekwe each killed four.
  • Manuela Conte made her first-ever start in the Libero position and paced the Flames defense with 16 digs. Santiago dug out eight, and Carla Salvato ended the night with seven.
  • The Flames out-blocked the Penguins 6-2. Ndekwe contributed three blocks, and Santiago added two.
