Flames Defeated by Northwestern

UIC held to 31.6 percent from the floor

EVANSTON, Ill. – The UIC women's basketball team (1-1) fell 87-44 to city foe Northwestern (3-0) in its first road match of the 2018-19 season on Thursday evening. The Wildcats shot 50.7 percent from the floor while keeping the Flames to a 31.6 shooting percentage, while also holding the advantage in rebounds, 46-28.

First Half Highlights
  • The Wildcats struck early, sinking their first bucket in the first 10 seconds. Taylor Toney responded for the Flames, driving in for the layup just 20 seconds later, 2-2.
  • After the early scores from both sides, neither team was able to score in the next two minutes. Northwestern sank a jumper to get back on the board first, but the Flames continued to drive to the hoop, sinking a pair of layups, 6-4, for their first lead of the game.
  • Northwestern took the next six, 10-6, and after a Toney Jumper and a Kiarra Thompson free throw, the Flames were back within one, 10-9. The Wildcats quickly brought back their cushion, scoring six in just over 50 seconds, 16-9. A three by Tatum McCall would be the only points for the Flames in the remainder of the quarter and by the end of the first, Northwestern's lead had grown to 10, 22-12.
  • A 12-2 run for the Wildcats in the middle minutes of the second quarter allowed Northwestern to double up on the Flames, 38-19, and the lead grew to 20 by halftime, 44-24.  
Second Half Highlights
  • Northwestern sank a three that gave way to a 7-0 run to start the second half, 51-24. Christelle Nyauchi put away a pair of free throws for UIC's first points of the frame, 51-26.
  • The Flames were held to a mere eight points in the third, while the Wildcats put up another 17 to lead 61-32 after 30 minutes of play.
  • The Wildcats put up their highest point total in the fourth with 26 points, while the Flames put up just 12, giving Northwestern an 87-44 victory.
Facts & Figures
  • Taylor Toney led UIC's offensive efforts, leading in both points (12) and rebounds (6).
  • Brittany Byrd was the only other Flame to reach double-digits, tallying 11 points.
  • Kara Wilson recorded a career-high seven points and handed out a personal-best five assists, making the first start of her career.
  • Byrd, Jada Nneji, Jasmine Gaines and Wilson all finished the night with three rebounds apiece.
