Flames Fall in Semifinals to Top-Seeded Green Bay, 3-1

UIC bows out of Horizon League Tournament

GREEN BAY, Wis. – The No. 4 seed UIC volleyball team (18-13) saw its run for the Horizon League Championship come to a close on Saturday with a 3-1 (24-26, 25-22, 22-25, 16-25) loss to top-seeded Green Bay (19-10). The Flames end their second-straight 18-win season, while also reaching 10 wins in Horizon League play for the first time since 2012.

Match Highlights
  • Set One: The Flames took an early lead after a 5-0 run, 7-4. Green Bay took five unanswered points to take over the lead, 14-13, but UIC replied with four straight, 17-14.
  • Set One: The Phoenix took back the lead after a 5-0 streak, 20-18, but the score tied at 21 after a pair of Green bay errors.
  • Set One: Still tied at the 24-point mark, the Phoenix were able to capitalize on a Flames error and a successful attack to take the 26-24 victory.
  • Set Two: The second set started much the same as the end of the first, until UIC pulled ahead off a 10-2 series, 14-8.
  • Set Two: The Phoenix were able to come within one, 20-19, but that was as close as they would get, as a Paola Santiago termination ended the set in UIC's favor, 25-22.  
  • Set Three: Green Bay got the early lead in set three, 7-3, but the Flames fought back to take the lead over at the 11-10 mark.
  • Set Three: The Phoenix went on a 3-0 streak to go up 16-13, but UIC scored four of the next five to tie it at 17.
  • Set Three: All tied up at 22, Green Bay took three straight off two kills and a block to end it, 25-22.
  • Set Four: The Phoenix got off to a 16-9 lead to start set four, and grew its lead to nine after a7-0 run, 18-9. The Flames were unable to stage a comeback, dropping the set 25-16.
Facts & Figures
  • Paola Santiago led the offense with 15 kills. Kiera James was also a large contributor with 14.
  • Michelle Glover recorded nine kills for the offense, while Clara Lamb recorded eight.
  • Marija Borcic ended her freshman season with her 16th double-double of the season, registering 45 assists and 10 digs.
  • Manuela Conte led the defensive effort with 18 digs. Velina Minkova was also in double figures in digs with 11.
  • The Flames were out-killed 65-55, and were out-blocked 11-5. The hosts also held the advantage in digs, 67-63.
